The summer recess comes up next month, they wouldn't want a long, protracted leadership election spoiling their holidays!

His Father is. Thing is, even if he was born there, he doesn't talk like one so he's on a winner. Bit like Colin Montgomery but he's ginger so he doesn't count!

Fair point, but a new leader might not have that luxury. With Labour doing so badly, many MPs who thought they had safe seats are getting edgy.

 

If Brown doesn't turn things around quickly after the recess, then it wouldn't surprise me to see him dumped and replaced with a caretaker candidate, who'll lose the election less badly than Brown would have done, and then be replaced by David Milliband.

The real reason that Labour MPs don't want Brown to go is that a new leader would be under a lot of presure being the second unelected Prime Minister to have to call an immediate General Election which Labour will lose heavily and the majority of said MPs will lose their seats along with pay and other perks(expenses) of being an MP. Brown having waited so long to be Prime Minister will go on for as long as he can and the longer he stays the better for the Conservatives.

My point is, he doesn't appear to be Scottish. Accents are very important in politics. I remember this from my college days. We did a thesis with Ivor Crew on why Labour didn't win the election, when all polls stated the public agreed with the majority of Labour's policies compared to the Conservatives. In all seriousness, Kinnock's Welshness and ginger hair* lost votes. I know it's not right but unfortunately everyone over 18 has the right to vote in this country.

I was reading The Spectator magazine last week (I know, I know) and a big part of this is that the party, especially the parliamentary Labour Party are absolutely terrified of him. And there are a lot of quite inexperienced MPs in the party; you wouldn't get a lad in his first season at Yorkshire telling Brian Close to stand aside. It's difficult to believe, I know, but he is, under it all, an old school disciplinarian who scares the sh?t out of them all. It's fairly difficult to reconcile that with his public persona at the minute, however, but don't underestimate personal wranglings like that for why things happen or don't. I don't know what this Johnson is like, but I can say with a high degree of confidence that more people would vote for a Johnson led party than a Brown one. Maybe even including me, because may the Lord pity us all with a few years of Cameronian voodoo economics.

The fact that David and Samantha Cameron are worth an almost-entirely-inherited ?30m, according to financial expert Philip Beresford, isn?t in itself damning. Franklin Roosevelt was very rich, but became a great crusader for the poor. But Cameron is advocating policies that will benefit his tiny class of super-rich Trustafarians at the expense of the rest of us. He is committed to spending billions on a massive tax cut for the richest inheritees, paid for by the bottom 94 percent of us ? and now he has announced his enthusiasm for a bogus economic theory that will justify shovelling far more of our money their way.

 

Although you wouldn?t know it from the coverage, David Cameron?s economic philosophy was already surprisingly far outside the political mainstream before his latest revelation. President Barack Obama explained why in a recent speech, where he was arguing the Republican hard right who take the same line. He said: ?Economists on both the left and right agree that the last thing a government should do in the middle of a recession is to cut back on spending. You see, when this recession began, many families sat around their kitchen table and tried to figure out where they could cut back. That is a completely responsible and understandable reaction. But if every family in America cuts back, then no one is spending any money, which means there are more layoffs, and the economy gets even worse. That's why the government has to step in and temporarily boost spending in order to stimulate demand.?

 

Cameron is almost alone in the democratic world in disagreeing and demanding immediate cuts in public spending as the global economy grinds to a halt. When I asked this year?s Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman whether this would make the recession worse, he replied: ?Yes. For sure,? and then added that Cameron?s policies were ?pure Herbert Hoover.?

 

This is serious enough ? although hardly anyone knows it. But then, two weeks ago, Cameron went even further. He was asked about whether the government?s proposals to increase taxes on the richest one percent would raise more money for the Treasury. He replied: ?It?s a very difficult calculation about where we are? We have to put this [top rate of tax] in a queue of things we would want to get rid of.

I hope so; I hope that they have been listening to the country, as they have had 12 years to do so.

 

The difficulty of changing paths is that so many people are receiving some benefits (that are not sustainable in the long term), but you have to break it to them gently that there will have to be a readjustment of expectation.
