A Certain Player Is Guilty As Sin

Featured Replies

Right, I'm not condoning this

but

If it was one of our "lads" up for a scuffle in a bar, would folk be calling for them to be strung up by the bollocks for a quick punch or two?

Young drunk men fight....what a shock!

Im not wanting him to be strung up,but to be found Not Guilty after all the rest pleaded guilty and he was the one who was winging the punches around he should of at least been found Guilty! The justice system is a f*cking joke! The thing is next week you'll see some lad get sent down for 6 weeks because he called a Police Horse fat!!

I think the message this judgement is sending out is if you are a rich, famous footballer, you can act as rudely & arrogant as you want, it's ok.

Our society's going to the dogs. I blame Heat magazine as well as the Ticket Office.

Then again, I suppose there's plenty of blokes out there who behave in a macho style though, to compensate for being unable to keep the wife satisfied.

I blame the Americanisation of our country. But that's another thread!!

I blame Pot Noodles cause they smell of BO

Not really arsed by this but I don't really understand how he can mistakenly act in self defence by giving someone who was under attack a twatting?

"At all times you insisted that you only ever acted in what you believed was reasonable self-defence to what you understandably, albeit you accept mistakenly, believed was an attempted attack upon you by Marcus McGee.

Can't believe the prosecution didn't go for change of venue.

The Ken Dodd thing was a farce years ago and this is the same. 12 scousers are never going to convict a famous scouser, he could've killed the bloke and he'd be walking free now.

No one would expect them to be strung up - and realistically all Gerrard was going to get was a slap on the wrists.

But if one of our lot had been filmed doing that then they could hardly expect to avoid getting grief - get into pissed up handbags and you can't whinge if summat comes of it. The fact that its one rule for rich footballers and another for the rest of us is what's wrong here.

Don't disagree with that, nor am I saying that he's not guilty

but

As much as it's one rule for one...the reaction from some is also disproportionate

I mean, the bloke's ok aint he?

So self defence now is classed as hitting out if you feel like you might be hit.

Could be. If by hitting first you prevent an escalation of an incident then it was self defence. If, after you hit him and he goes down, you then proceed to kick seven colours out of him then it went beyond self defence.

It's simple really, they found him not guilty then they don't have to have a minute's silence at every scouse gathering where he is involved.

I hate quoting Wikipedia but they have it down as:

"De-escalation

De-escalation is the use of voice, tone, and body language to calm a potentially violent situation before violence actually ensues"

Is body-language classed as hitting out?

I really don't see how 3 uppercuts (with some force going off the video) can be classed as self defence!

Correct. Pre-Emptive strikes, covered by s3 Criminal Law Act 1967. If you fear for your personal safety, you can strike. BUT it must be deemed proportionate.

Frank Martin case - bloke 1 coming at him in his home, pre-emptive action - no problem. the 2nd bloke was running away, therefore the pre-emptive wasn't proportionate as there was 'no immediate danger'.

I have actually got sympathy with Gerrard (for the first time ever) i would say if it kicked off most on here would have done the same.....nevermind all that bullshit that "i have never hit anyone" bollocks!

So are you one of those that kicks off just cos someone looks at you in a funny way? Only pricks kick off in pubs. People go out to enjoy a nice few jars and dick heads spoil it for everyone else and sometimes you don't feel safe cos some neanderthal might attack or glass you at any moment. Well at least they think they are hard.

It's spared us the wingeing so we should be thankful for that. But not being a legal eagle or knowing the facts of he case in detail, I suppose that I should be reluctant to say that the bloody verdict stinks, but it does.

Irony is that maybe in the long term the perception that he cheated justice by being who he was will actually do him more harm than just being honest and admitting to argy-bargy while bladdered.

Indeed. Lee Bowyer was found innocent, Jonathon Woodgate guilty, when they were involved in a similar incident.

No one pays much attention to Woodgate but Bowyer has been vilified.
