The Bolton section of the Football Finances site has been created.

 

The aim is to explain the club finances in as plain English as possible. Please have a look, and feedback any typos, or other mistakes.

 

There is more than the usual amount of comment on the site. Usually it is left up to the reader to make their own opinions. Howver as more and more clusb are examined and it becomes clear how poorly run some clubs are it has beceom less easy to avoid making comment !

The Watford Comparison doesn't stack up either.

 

Eddie Davies owns 99.5% or thereabouts of the club. Who is he going to fall out with? Himself?

 

That Watford Spiv was a board member, and shareholder, but owned way, way less of the club.

 

 

In short, not a very well constructed analysis.

The ground is valued at ?41m.

Not much more than what it cost!

 

Don't know how accurate this is, but, on face value it doesn't look good

IIRC it was built at a cost of ?37 million, the south stand was extended to incorporate the hotel at a cost of ?11 million, and the north stand also extended to accommodate the offices (I can't remember a cost for that).

 

Also would the new training facility at Euxton not also be included as a tangible asset?

Apolgies, yes the wage bill has gone up 4-fold since the promotion season, and the income has gone up 5-fold, so no problems there.

 

It would have been better of me to compare say 2005 or 2006 and with 2009. They show an increase in the total income of ?6m-?8m. While the wages have gone up ?12m-?18m. Although ?450k of that is down to the directors pay rather than the players.

The hotel is counted as a Burnden Leisure asset, the ground and the training facility are the possession of Bolton Wanderers. If the Burnden assets are looked at then the total fixed assets rise to ?52m. I had started by ttrying to show just the club finances but it is impossible to do so without looking at how much the parent company lends the football team.

 

The hotel seems to lose money each year, but the property woudl have some re-sale value.

Who would pay ?41M to buy the ground ?

 

Football clubs have to spend loads on their ground but who would want to buy a football ground?

 

I am not sure it is worth anything, only an asset if someone who buy it.

This what the club had in their accounts.

 

 

 

See the footnote in the accounts saying that the club viewed the value of the players as being ?21m in 2004. The players must have come in on Bosman's/low fees and the club are legally bound to value them at the actual amount paid. There is an upside to that situation which is that when the club comes to selling on those low-fee players the money that comes in will all be profit. This woudl be shown in the subsequent years by the increased profit the club made. Or not. I suspect the ?21m came from asking Big Sam how much he thought the players were actually worth

Portsmouth blew it big time in 2008 (the last year they have reported), with 55m wages, and 12m from "bums on seats", before that season (in which they probably paid big FA Cup winning bonuses) their worst had been 37m from 9m.

 

Not sure you want to be competing with Portsmouth for least worst though

 

Most clubs are between 2 and 3 times the gate receipts, even the stupid payers like Newcastle
