The stewards at the reebok have been great for a while now. I think they must have been told to tone it down as so many where getting ejected. You have to be a bloody tit to get thrown out these days, that or get caught smoking but thats always going to get a straight red.

 

Gutted i missed last night, was at an interview so gave my ticket to a mate. Would have liked to know what PG and OC medium and long term goals are for the team, did this get mentioned?

Happy with that, with the odd cup run inbetween. I can see us getting through to the quarters of the FA this year at least (fancy us against either leeds or spurs), you never know we could be in europe again next year if we get a couple of decent draw. If we avoid Chelsea to the final we would get in the uefa cup by default.

Just chuckled at that, i was working in Morecambe at the time, and got told Mr Gartside would be at the Greaves Hotel answering questions. I badgered him to buggery about signing E-H-D full-time, it must have worked, he got took on the following week.

Are Bolton planning to use other clubs in lower divisions, as nursery clubs for our 1st team? I can see we are doing this (and great it is too!) for Arsenal & City that are top half of the prem, but what about us using clubs to hone the skills of our bright sparks (to replace the city and Arsenal ones?) seems its better than playing them in the reserves?

FA rules expressly forbid any club in the National League System (Prem down to lower reaches of non-league) from being a nursery club to any other club in the National League System. That is either formally or informally- hence the limit on loan players of two per club.

 

If we did that, we would end up with a system like Spain, where some "clubs" in the second division are the reserve sides of Primera Liga clubs. For example, Real Madrid Castilla are the obvious nursery club of Real Madrid. That would instantly devalue our entire league structure and we might as well go ahead with a closed shop franchise system like the NFL.

 

The beauty of our system is that any club can theoretically reach the highest level due to excellence on the field, rather than a quirk of the club's location. Wigan Athletic (although the last club to be elected into the Football League, rather than promoted) rose through the ranks of non-league football, up through the Football League and are now established as a Premier League club. Wimbledon enjoyed a similar rise before their subsequent fall from grace and conversion to Franchise FC. To a lesser extent, Accrington Stanley, Aldershot, and many others have enjoyed league football having started life at the base of the Pyramid. To remove that dream from our grassroots clubs would also remove their reason for being. Football would only be played by professional clubs, academies and pub teams (assuming the latter can find a pitch to play on). There would be no in-between, and we could lose thousands of clubs overnight, reducing the level of participation. With less football being played generally, there would be less opportunities for the gems to be spotted in non-league football. Ian Wright came from non-league, Chris Smalling was at a Ryman League club until recently. And lest we forget, our very own Jason McAteer signed from Marine for about ?1,000 (I believe the deal was ?500 plus a new set of kit!)- we sold him to Liverpool for ?4.5mn! Anthony Pilkington was spotted playing for Atherton Collieries a couple of years ago, was instrumental in Stockport County's promotion campaign and is now a prominent figure at Huddersfield Town. David Nugent was plying his trade at Bury not too long ago- now a Premier League player.

 

So this is why it couldn't and certainly shouldn't happen. An effective scouting and loan system is perfectly adequate, and I'm sure sell-on clauses can be waived by the original club or first refusal clauses can be inserted as far as permanent deals are concerned. If anything needs to change, it is the "success now" attitude of certain clubs.
