Anyone Been To Riga Recently?

On a stag do in Riga at the end of this month and could do with a little advice.

The usual really:

How much is ale?

Is it best to hunt down some Lats before I go or buy out there?

How available is, ahem, alchohol supplement?

Best bars/avoids?

Will I get killed?

Your help will, as always, be greatly appreciated

I went in 2006. I think the price of ale, etc has prob risen since then. Have a look at the Trip Advisor forums. Lots of horror stories but if you play it sensible you'll be alreet. Nearest I came to possible trouble was when some young lady in a bar was asking me to go to a place called Roxys with her. I refused her request as it seemed too good to be true. She was good looking after all!! It turns out that these girls are paid a fee to get you in, and then the place fleeces you. That can be by either maxing out your cc, or even frog marching you to an ATM with the threat of being tasered!

If you fancy a bit of culture then the Occupation Museum is worth an hour or two away from the ale.

For a beer with a view go to the Skyline Bar @ Hotel Reval, 22nd floor I think. They do nice cocktails IIRC.

Ale is extortionate in the centre, about 3-4 quid a chuck flat rate more or less, more in the 'classier' places. These dirt cheap Eastern European cities are a figment of history.

Exchange rate is also fucked, a quid bought you about 2 lats when I started going about 6 years ago, it'll now get you about .80

Alcohol supplement is probably available from undercover coppers desperate to fleece a cuntish Brit all over the city. Frankly, I'd sooner snort diarrhoea. Same goes for the strip joints, they're there for nothing more than to fleece you for your every penny.

Yes, there's a good chance you'll get killed. You should probably go somewhere else.

belting place 2/3 years ago

had a fairly miserable time of it a couple of years back. Expensive, any women there are are there to fleece you for everything you have and it's full of other stag do's looking miserable.

Sitting in a bar with several groups of blokes can be grim. Especially by only the 2nd night when someone has inevitably got too pissed and ended up in bother, meaning everyone's having to keep their wits about them which isn't conducive to letting your hair down.

Bit like Bolton town centre in truth. Only you can't get a taxi home when you've had enough.

Sorry.

I went 3 or 4 years ago in about May - lovely weather and decent folk in general. Like anywhere stag-do-esque, keepy your wits about you and you'll be fine!

Oh and I agree with the skyline bar...bit of a mini Cloud 23; nice place away from the riff-raff

Went there around 18 months ago, forget the idea of cheap pints as its popularity has caught up with it. Around the ?3 a pint mark is the norm in the centre.

Stayed about a 20 minute walk from the centre, but on the plus side there was plenty of back street bars charging around ?1.50 a pint on the way in. Problem is though they don't tend to speak good english so if you're round that area learn the local phrase for a beer.

Got all the usual stories about how folk have been conned in bars/strip clubs etc so its like anywhere that you need to be on your wits. There's plenty of casinos around the edge of the centre as well. The bloke on the reception in our hotel warned us off these though saying that they are run by Russian mafia so you don't want to fuck about in there.

All in all a nice place though. And I still have a local beer glass I nicked from the tower bar that has been mentioned earlier.

And look out for the 70 odd year old woman dancing in the centre, you'll know what I mean when you see her.

Went in Nov '08 and had absolutely no trouble whatsoever. Lovely place, no more expensive than supping over here and all the locals were really friendly.

Went with my Dad's mates who were all around the 50 mark so that may have helped with the relaxed atmosphere - we did get told that stag dos are usually less welcome.

sounds like most on here went since it has become shite

just fer the record

joint best euro city piss up with prague for me, that includes getting arrested for pissing in public

Take loads of smoke bombs and a big coat

Get into the rub'a'tug shops and bang all the huwers then set smoke bombs off, throw them everywhere and run out the front door with your coat over your head

Don't pay for any beer by simply setting up a tab then climbing out of the bogs window after your 6th pint, take some money just in case there are no windows

If you are gripped by bouncers tell them you will report them to Gordon Brown if they don't get their filty hands off you, if they continue dragging you out, shit in your underpants, scoop handfulls out and throw it at them, they'll soon let go, proceed to put your coat over your head then run off down the street
