Calling Bolton a city would be Olympic standard turd polishing.

 

Aside from the town hall building, which genuinely pisses on most you'll see, the town centre is just one big cludge.

 

Newport Street needs levelling. Bradshawgate the same.

 

However, the real problem is the large percentage of human wreckage you see shuffling around. That requires a solution that even Hitler never signed his name to.

The council haven't owned the market hall since the 70's/80's so were pretty much powerless to stop the refurb.

Salford and Blackburn are cities too, so it may count against bolton.

It is a shame that the apporoach to bolton town centre is bradshawgate, if the town hall square qnd le mans crescent was opened up would that not be a completely different scenario, also I think whoever decided to re-locate Bolton station and lose the old railway staion facade wants shooting as Bolton station now looks like a tube station.

Commenting on the shithole Bolton has become though, got to admit that getting back every one or two years, you notice the stark reality of how downhill it has gone.

 

It wasn't that long ago folk were flocking to Bolton as it was seen as a good shopping town (whatever the fook that means). Shortly after the Market Centre was opened. Presume they all go to the Trafford Centre now?

 

Conversely, Manchester centre seems to be all bright and shiny.

 

I was always against the Greater Manchester tag and I'm fcuking certain that all available funds are being directed to modernising Manc Centre and the surrounding towns are suffering.

 

Another thing I have noticed is a lack of pride in homes. I was browt up in Tintern Avenue, Tonge Moor. Used to have immaculate gardens, well maintained houses and respectable people. Like the fcuking Bronx now.

until private companies invest in the town centre not a great deal will change.

 

The council hasn't got the money to build things like the shopping centres, offices and appartments that have regenerated manchester even manchester didn't the vast majority of the regeneration in manc was funded by developers like Urban Splash and bruntwood.

 

given the money i'd knock down newport street (only about 4 shops on there would be granted a lease in the Trafford Centre) and open up all the old buildings hidden behind the pound shops and create a link from Victoria square to nelson square.

What in that description couldn't you apply to manchester?

 

Pot holes? have you driven round manchester recently?

Empty shops? Th'arndale's full of em as is Market Street and Deansgate

One way systems? the city centre is full of em.

A score of poundshops and charity shops? theres plenty of them in Manchester too especially around piccadilly gardens.

Jacket potato stalls? i can think of 3 on market street alone

run down station? Victoria

Buses that don't turn up? The buses in bolton are run by the same people that run manchesters and they're just as unreliable in manchester/bury/oldham as they are in Bolton.

cycle lanes? that's a national thing pretty much all major road in and out of tows/cities have them on now.

Over Zealous parking wardens? Yet again that seems to be a national complaint.

 

Bolton is very far from perfect but barring shiny new buildings and an over priced tram system Manchesterhas exactly the same problems as Bolton. Even the great beacon of capitalist commerce the Trafford Centre has has plenty of empty shops.

Surely to be a city, you need a half decent infrastructure, historical buildings (we've demolished a few), good parking, public transport, decent shops, restaurants, big businesses..

 

we have pot holes, empty shops, one way systems, a score of pound shops, charity shops, jacket potato stalls, a run down train station, buses that don't turn up, cycle lanes, over zealous parking attendants

I'd say that there's a whole deal more marketing could be done with regard to Bolton's "Largest Town in Europe" than in Bolton's "Just another City"

 

All they need to do is find the right public relations bod.

That would revoluonise the town centre, and make it a destination that people from outside town would want to visit, in turn bringing in millions of pounds into the town, if the council do not have the vision to create the enviroment that people want to visit and spend money in then Bolton will only go further down the drain.

No i just understand that the problems that bolton faces aren't unique to bolton, its a national problem with many causes too complex to go into on here.

Wigan and Leigh (as a borough) has more people but bolton is a bigger area, it all depends on what you measure a large town on.

Bolton Parish Church will have to be changed into a cathedral in order for us to be a city, and for that reason iam out Preston got it instead of us last time, and what may of been a factor is we are too close to other citys like Manchester, Salford, Stretford, etc.

 

It is not essential to have a cathedral to be a city. Hull, Stoke, Preston, Wolverhampton, Sunderland and Brighton to name a few cities do not have cathedrals. Conversely having a cathedral does not mean a place is a city and Blackburn does not have city status. Proximity does not debar city status eg London and Westminster, Manchester and Salford, Newcastle and Sunderland.
