Bolton Citeh?

Is there any point to this? We may have a big population but are there any benefits to becoming a city? Or is this just a rebranding excercise so we can look more attractive in the next edition of Lonely Planet.

Personally I like being called a town and don't think we need anyone else to confirm us as a city in order to recognise our importance in British history or our standing today.

No real benefit other than being able to brand ourselves as a city.

don't see the point myself.

im not sure on the benefits, although im pretty sure your higher up in the pecking order for government funding etc

nope not really.

There's probably a couple of short term funding streams for regeneration but other than that it won't make much difference.

even if we got more funding, the incompetent bastards would waste it on line marking

I'm not really fussed about it but i wouldnt mind Bolton being a City :good:

They'd have to change every sign from Town Centre to City Centre, the town hall would need renaming etc. The money would be better spent invested into areas like Bradshawgate that look more like downtown?Port-au-Prince.

Apparently european funding came through earlier this week to renovate the bottom end of Bradshawgate around the shiffnall street area.

i'm very rarely in bolton town centre these days

but one day last week i drove from the D&P to BOC

granted it was raining, but what a fcuking shithole

Good news hopefully, but the problem is now all the way up to Nelson Sq I think.

It's as bad as anything I've ever seen in Europe, inc the Albanian part of Skopje, the slums of Marseiile and favelas of Porto.

If it doesn't get it will the blame be put on executing the Earl of Derby so the Queen doesn't like us?

The 'Merchants Quarter' (wanky name i know) project takes in the area bounded by St Peters Way, Bridgeman Place, Bradshawgate and the rail line.

Just drop a bomb on the whole lot. It regenerated Manchester.

A high risk strategy but then again what is there to lose.

Where the smackeads, pimps, pros and kerb crawlers going to go then?

Would City status not mean higher Council tax ?

Surely to be a city, you need a half decent infrastructure, historical buildings (we've demolished a few), good parking, public transport, decent shops, restaurants, big businesses..

we have pot holes, empty shops, one way systems, a score of pound shops, charity shops, jacket potato stalls, a run down train station, buses that don't turn up, cycle lanes, over zealous parking attendants

I'd say that there's a whole deal more marketing could be done with regard to Bolton's "Largest Town in Europe" than in Bolton's "Just another City"

All they need to do is find the right public relations bod.

Sound just like Manchester to me.

Righto.

I admire your spirit.

What do they put in your tea at the council? Or do you get supplied with rose tinted safety goggles?

What in that description couldn't you apply to manchester?

Pot holes? have you driven round manchester recently?

Empty shops? Th'arndale's full of em as is Market Street and Deansgate

One way systems? the city centre is full of em.

A score of poundshops and charity shops? theres plenty of them in Manchester too especially around piccadilly gardens.

Jacket potato stalls? i can think of 3 on market street alone

run down station? Victoria

Buses that don't turn up? The buses in bolton are run by the same people that run manchesters and they're just as unreliable in manchester/bury/oldham as they are in Bolton.

cycle lanes? that's a national thing pretty much all major road in and out of tows/cities have them on now.

Over Zealous parking wardens? Yet again that seems to be a national complaint.

Bolton is very far from perfect but barring shiny new buildings and an over priced tram system Manchesterhas exactly the same problems as Bolton. Even the great beacon of capitalist commerce the Trafford Centre has has plenty of empty shops.

the majority of problems that plague bolton can be applied to every town in the country.

Are we too close to Manchester to be considered?

Salford and Blackburn are cities too, so it may count against bolton.

They could always downgrade the shithole know as Blackburn and give it to us. Not the shithole but the city status

Bolton Parish Church will have to be changed into a cathedral in order for us to be a city, and for that reason iam out :nea: Preston got it instead of us last time, and what may of been a factor is we are too close to other citys like Manchester, Salford, Stretford, etc.

We could just use the one from Liverpool, aparently they have 'one to spare' :rolleyes2:
