Serious for here I know but we should never forget the Russian workers who sealed off the reactors & the Yank doctors who flew in and treated those affected, in the full knowledge of the levels of radiation they were exposing themselves to. There's too much talk of footballers as heroes, that's proper heroism.

I watched a programme about it a little while ago when they went back. The kids weren't even evacuated from school initially. It was sad viewing.

My cousin is heavily involved in a charity called Chernobyl Childrens Project International, they brought a few (25) of them over to Ireland for the summer, I was over and met a few and their parents at a function, Jesus, the stories they could tell would break your heart. these kids, are the kids of people who were kids when this happened, oldest was about 12 youngest was 5, and still suffering medical conditions because of it and more so the lack of action after it, one lad, in particular, was 7 years old, after being in Ireland (not particular Ireland, should say away from his own place) for a week, he lost the numbness and stiffness in his joints that plagues him 24/7 at home, at home he has all the symptoms of chronic arthritis, due, i was told, just to the general atmosphere, the water, the ground where his food grows etc, a week after not being there, he's on the bouncy castles at the event and kicking a ball around with my lad for the whole afternoon, not a care in the world, other than not being able to understand each other. I didnt see him when he first arrived but was told the transformation was incredible. Trouble is, after a few weeks, they all had to go back, and not much can be done about the conditions they live in at home.

Drive up from the A585 towards the dock area near Freeport, along the main road along the coast to where the pier was.

 

Grimsville.

 

Not to mention many of the locals who look like they lived in Chernobyl when it went off and decided to spend a few months afterwards for a bit of looting.

You may be suprised but I have a BSc in Environmental Technology. Honest.

 

Anyway, one of the good things about this planet is it can adapt to its surrounding environment fairly well. Eventually. You dont have ice ages lasting thousands of years killing off all sorts of lifeform only to produce what we have now a few thousand years later. Thats one reason why I am sceptical about climate change and global warming but thats sommat else.

Them there trees, the vegetation, the scrubland....they may look healthy but they'll be growing in shit that should really be glowing and making an eerie humming noise in the dark. The level of that contamination is probably still measureable in parts per million rather than one scoop of soil, one scoop of glowing shit - but it will still be many hundreds/thousands times more dangerous than it ordinarily should be.

 

For example arsenic is found naturally in soils. We grow vegetables in it without question. But would you empty a bag of arsenic in a pot of muck and start growing carrots in it?

 

The fall out lands, the rain washes it onto the ground, watercourses, and aquifers which then act as a pathway to the vegetation somewhere along the line. Some till die, some will adapt. One thing is for sure, you wouldn't want to pick many apples off many trees.

yeh everything still growing, just very high levels of radiation not suitable for long term habitation, think the pictures show the immediate area around the site, which, as someone else said, is now actually a tourist destination. everything is exactly as it was when it was evacuated, sort of a "Mary Celeste" experience i suppose.

looks like they are still growing from some of them pictures, just not very well

 

some of the pictures are really eerie though, of a place that was just left as it was where death and stuff hung about for a while - the gas masks give it a sort of auschwitz feel to it, where they have all them piles of glasses

Apparantly it is going to be derestricted later this year. You can currently get tours of the zone including, but not access to, the reactors. Would be a very interesting trip to do, if your that way inclined.

Medical workers monitor their exposure to radiation in the controlled environment of a hospital. Tours to places like this may be a great idea until, in about 20 years time, you end up with some fucking big lumps all over your body.

The geek in me wouldn't let this go Silent Hill hasn't got any zombies in it it's a game based on parallel haunted realitys and so the badies are ghosts not zombies..

To further kill my credabillity as an adult the call of duty 4 game uses some of the above locations in the story mode and as a zone in the online mode.

 

And no before I get the abuse I don't live in my mams box room!

I only went to Limoges as there was an airport there, 2 hours from where my mate lived (Oradour was half way between the two)

Oradour is a great testament to a brutal past. Steeped with historical significance.

 

The other biggy for urbex types is Gunkanjima Island in Japan, location for the Battle Royale films.

The levels are acceptable for water and air. Forestation has obviously been depleted and regrown. People have to be wary of buildings, which a lot of excursions now prohibit entry to and ofcourse the reactors, which are out-of-bounds anyway. Believe they take a Geiger counter at all times as well.

Also, it's not so much deserted as flattened if google maps is anything to go by.

Interesting video. I'd love to go there and have a good look around. Fair play to the creators of Call of Duty, they got the game layouts spot on going off the real life pictures and video's...
