Bolton's British Managers

Featured Replies

Just been looking at the list of Managers throughout the clubs history. We've never had one from outside of Britain. Started wondering if any other prem clubs can say the same. Man U haven't as far as I can recall, maybe Sunderland and Wolves. Can anyone think of any others? Also surprised to read we've only ever had 31 in our entire history. I know clubs who've had nearly that in the past 2 decades!

I could be really picky and say that Coyle isn't actually British.

Country of origin - not international side they played for by way of convoluted lineage :-)

I'm not having that. Baaaarnsley.

So, all in all johnny foreigner really only started to manage English clubs in the last 20 or so years. Anyone who hasn't had an overseas manager recently probably has never had one.

Who then, was the first to come from outside UK and ROI?

Double post.

Ardilles?

1st foreign manager in the the top division was Josef Venglos at Villa, I think. Early 90's?

Lower down the leagues Danny Bergara (remember him?) managed Rochdale then Stockport in the mid to late 80's.

Bergara got sacked after getting pissed at a do and abusing the chairman, may have been a Xmas do....reckon it was early 90's but memory is hazy

Was the chairman Elwood at Stockport?

If so, it would be mid 90's, that. 95 or 96 IIRC.

Bert Trautmann, not only a German Paratrooper in the second world war and famous for playing on with a broken neck in the FA Cup Final, managed Stockport County in the 60's.
