Labour cost is, far and away, the main reason for so many UK plant closures. I've been involved in too many decisions where the solution is a simple one. It makes it even tougher to have to present this whilst you have friends working on these plants.

Its already happening, there are sweatshops all over Leicester where there is no minimum wage. UK manufacturing should be trying to compete with the likes of Turkey who I use for better end products quality is top draw as is service, lead times are short and Min order Qty in general lower than india and china, given the very different world we are about to enter short highly fashionable quallity items and not neccesarily the cheapest will become more the norm than has been the case over the last 10 a case in point from previous post the Loake shoes.

Relevant points have been made about the quality of product being made in Indo-China (can't comment on Pakistan) being poorer. Absolutely no argument from me here.

 

But to think that manufacturing on a large scale will be brought back to these shores is incredibaly naive IMO. The most important thing, for all companies, is not shit they put on their mission statement. The most important thing is what the shareholders expect. Do the shareholders care if the quality is poorer? Do they fuck.

I've read this thread with interest, and I think somebody somewhere has already pointed out a lot will depend on what industry we're talking about.

 

NB deals with textiles and DBP deals with drugs - so they are two very different things. I deal with electronic components, which again is very different. Never again are the particular products that I buy/sell ever going to be made in Europe, it just isn't possible.

 

I was recently speaking to the President of my largest supplier who has just started buying up large chunks of land in Vietnam and The Phillipines, as he says that is where he is off to build factories next as China is getting too expensive. In order to stay competetive he knows he has to move on from China

 

Somebody in the world is always going to be able to manufacture low cost high volume goods for less money that we can as long as we have a circa ?6.00 minimum wage. Vietnam next....then South America........and then god help us over to Africa...which could prove interesting.

High Price Low Volume = Europe/US

Mrs CWPs cousin is about 20 (I think) he's never had more than two or three days (back to back) since he left school at the age of 16. I asked him once why he didn't get a job, he replied "I don't need one" - he's happy just working for a few days each month doing odd jobs for folk to get enough cash together to buy his weed. He doesn't drive, as he doesn't need to and him and his stoner mates just sit around doing fuck all and complaining about being skint all the time. Somebody offered him a months worth of work on a building site earlier this year. He lasted about 4 days and then didn't bother turning up again. He then complained when the bloke running the site refused to pay him for the 4 days.

As I said above, freight costs from China are ridiculously cheap. The busier the shipping lines, the cheaper the freight costs.

Carriage from India to UK port is about $1400 for a 40 foot container, thats not a problem, the problem is when the locals start to want more wages and begin to consume the goods they manufacture, wage inflation kicks in and the price of the products goes through the roof, manufacturing will start to return to the UK as our wages are slashed and high unemployment drives the cost of labour down, even now I am keeping my eye open for manufacturing opportunities here in the UK even if it is on a small scale to begin with.
