Oldham Facup quarters for me

 

After beating bigger and better teams, and missing countless chances during the match, to conceed the way we did (Patterson to Beckford) was heartbreaking for a young impressional lad

 

oh and we missed the chance of playing the red scum at wembley

Losing 2-0 at Torquay and then Phil Neal getting sacked.

We were truly awful that day.

At Burnden, never got near 'em

SJM complaining after the game that we didn't even pick up 1 yellow card. Think we only conceded about half a dozen fouls throughout.

^{6 - 0 in the league cup v spurs think it was 2002 a few months later we drew them in the fa cup and it got postponed at 14.45 and took 9 hours to get back and then went to the re arenged fixture on the following tuesday and think it was 6 - 0 again. overall must have a fair bit of cash thrown away and some very late nights.}

New Years eve 1988 away, freezing cold, in their old ground, about 100 of us rattling round on an open terrace in the freezing cold.

it was one of them MASSIVE embankments like ours at Burnden Park. We were about 100 yards away from the pitch.

They had a pen in the other half of the pitch. I swear it was so far away you couldn`t even make out the number on the blokes shirt who was taking it.

Got home about 8.30pm. What a stupid idea that was.

I`ve had many a disappointment over the years but that day I really did wonder what it was all about.

Seem to recall a home loss v Brighton. Was the score about 1-3?

 

Remembered because:

 

1: It was fucking cold.

 

2: The club had erected a scaffold pole alongside one of the yellow safety corridor things on the Burnden Terrace. It seemed to be an addition to the no-man's-land between the home and away supporters.

Anyway, from my vantage point in the manny Road North, it seemed all were being good boys and abeying the directions to keep the right (left as it happens) side of the scaffold. One lad decided that his bladder wasn't going to wait for the queue so nipped under. He got rugby tackled down the steps by an over-zealous copper who decided that this was the crime of the century . . . or a chance to show his sargeant what a cock-end he was.

The copper in question, it later transpired, was a lad I'd done my fire brigade training with and he was a cock then too.
