Marcos Alonso

Seems to be a case of 2.whatever million spent, get him in the team. One half decent game at Ewood doesn't make him number one LB. Ricketts has to play from now. Sometimes a punt goes bad. Even a 2.whatever Real M. Frickin Drid One. Get over it . Learn.

does alonso look like a footballer to you

have you any idea why coyle played alonso ahead of steinnson

Alonso probably played because he scored v Wolves and didn't want to lower morale, on his performance yesterday, I think it'll take more injuries for him to be trusted again.

I'm not one to drop names (Craig Hignett) but a mate played in the Premiership for a number of years and he rates Duff as the best player he played with.

That I can understand. Damien Duff from his Blackburn days was all about pace and commanded ?17m.

Damien Duff of today isn't particularly quick. All about sharp turns, of which Alonso was caught flat footed on several occasions. I'd have backed myself to get past him on yesterday's showing.

Alonso was poor yesterday but would Steinsson have done any better? I remember a game against Liverpool where a poorer winger than Duff caused Steinsson to be hauled off at half time.

Yes Alonso was shit yesterday. Was he our worst player? yes probably. Did we lose the game because of Alonso? definitely not. We lost as a team(as we do when we win). Mavies and Reo Coker wernt far behind. Infact id have them 2nd and 3rd in, only because Miyachi didnt play the full game.

Yes he does look like a footballer. Technical abilty, he looks to have plenty of it.

Defensively he looks very suspect. The new type of fullback a lot of them do though. , especially aged 21 coming from Spain and having injury after injury in the two years you've been here.

Comparing his defensive abilities to Barness, Charlton and Whitlow is pointless as none of them were asked to bomb on in the same way you are expected nowadays.

Thats irrelevent though, defensively at the minute he is poor, as is Steinson, Robinson and Rickets at times(a point il come to). Are Steinson or Robinson going to get any better? I think we can all agree no. Is Alonso? who knows, not me or you. Could he though due to his age? yes definitely.

Onto the next point. Why is it ok to constantly blast coyle for playing players out of their best positions (its started with mavies now, see the other thread) but then criticize him for not playing Ricketts at left back?

Can Ricketts play left back? yes, is his more natural and more importantly his best position right back? yes, absolutely

So why are we now expecting coyle to do this in this instance? Everyone conveniently forgets the horror show Ricketts had at left back (cant rememeber the game off the top of my head) but he was at fault forat least 2 goals in a game. Don't for one minute think im against Rickets as im a massive fan.

Another thing, don't know if anyone has noticed but since Cahill has gone and weve replaced him with Ream weve lost a goal threat. Its clear Coyle has given Alonso this duty, every set piece and cross hes busting a gut to get on the end of anything. Hes now our third most dangerous threat on set pieces behind Wheather and Ngog.

Come on WM, give us the story on Steinsson? We know you're dying to..... :)

I'm glad Ream's been mentioned. I noticed a number of times, he passed to Ngog who had 2 or 3 men on him, when Petrov could've had it wide. What was wrong with taking it back out then back in?

He needs to think before he passes does that lad.

Alonso played presumably because Coyle wanted to make as few cganges as possible from a winning side. I can see why he did it.

Do I agree with him? No.

I don't know anything which isn't public knowledge, sorry. One thing about Craig Hignett though is that the first team he played for after Liverpool released him was us. I would guess only Malcolm W on here would have known that.

We scored two from set pieces against Blackburn and one against Wolves.

and i remember him doing a number on bale

i've seen alonso about 10 times and he's been better than decidedly mediocre just once

Bull shit.

None of his shortcomings yesterday were because he had to 'bomb on'. They were because he couldn't defend. At the very least, him and Ricketts should have been switched to stem the onslaught down the Fulham left.

As for players playing out of position, unless a couple of the more unknown quantities come good, we've really only got the players we had yesterday. Folk will have to accept a fair amount of make-do-and-mend between now and the end of the season.

I think Vela and Sordell will get a chance to stake their claims for the run-in tomorrow.

We scored two from set pieces against Blackburn and one against Wolves.

And?

Where did I say we dont score from set pieces?

I said we had lost a big goal throat from set pieces in Cahill and because we replaced him with Ream who isnt a goal threat, coyle has clearly asked Alonso to fill that role.

i thought we'd replaced him with wheater

ahhh, now i get it

alonso is playing cos he might score 5 goals a season, while costing us 20

silly me

You missed my point. Iv stated his defensive errors were shocking because defensively hes not the best yet.

Im saying comparing Whitlow, Barness and Charlton is absolutely pointless as if you want someone like that we can easily find one from the lower leagues.

Nowadays though you want someone who can get up and down all game and provide a threat going forward. Unfortunately theres not many of them about who can do both and they all play for big clubs Cole, Evra, Enrique, Clichy, Sagna, Marcelo, Alves etc

TO BE CLEAR

ITS NOT ALONSOS FAULT HE'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH

IT'S NOT EVEN A PROBLEM WE SIGNED HIM - A GAMBLE THAT FAILED. IT HAPPENS

BUT PICKING THE BUGGER IS DOWNRIGHT NEGLIGENT

and garp, why the fcuk are we trying to play a left back who can get forward when petrov is in front of him

lets just play one who can defend

i thought we'd replaced him with wheater

ream replaced knight who was less of a threat in the air than NB

Knight and Cahill both used to be a threat in the box from set pieces. Both went up for every set piece.

Now it looks like its Wheather and Alonso as ive said previosuly

Stop looking and picking up on the faults and have an open mind and see both sides of the coin and you will see it.

there aint 'both sides' to this coin

knight scored maybe 3 in 150? games

fcuking hell, thats worse than ngog

i'm not playing anymore cos your bait is shite

Knight and threat in the same sentence ^_^

How many did we score from set-pieces this season prior to Cahill leaving?

I just pointed out that we scored three in two games. I'd say our goal threat from set-pieces is as good as it's been for a while.

Not sure if you're genuinely talking shit or if you've reeled me in..

There is only one side of the coin, ALONSO IS DOGSHIT.

He covered whilst Steinsson was injured, he wasn't very good.

He played when Steinsson was back from injury as was by far the worst player in a poor team, that cost us 1 goal and could easily cost us 2 or 3 more if it wasn't for a few very good Bogdan saves.

Now that Coyle has seen that horror show (Alonso should have been dragged off after 20 minutes) hopefully he will have the sense to revert back to the defence which saw us actually do alright with Ricketts left and Steinsson right.

And on the point about playing Ricketts "out of position", yes he is right footed, but he is so comfortable on his left foot, that even yesterday when playing on the right he looked to use his left foot a lot of the time, so for me playing him at either full back doesn't matter, neither position is "out of position".

As for Alonso, god knows what to do with him, get what we can for him and send him back to Spain hopefully.

I didn't say Knight was brilliant at it. I said he was a threat and him and Cahill were the designated players to get up.

Depending on the 2 centre backs, after Davies/Ngog they were the main target on set pieces.

Cahill/Knight

Cahill/Wheather

Wheater/Knight

Weve since lost Cahill and Knight has been dropped. It now looks like Coyle has given the role to Alonso alongside Wheather. The irony in people saying Coyle has no tactics yet people can't see this. Brilliant.
