But is it? I think of art as pretty paintings and sculptures and ting. I'll happily stand there, admire them and think, "Fuck, they're good. That's talent that is. There's no way I could do that."

exactly the bloody point. Art is subjective. What you may enjoy others my be bored with and vice versa. What some consider offensive others say is pushing boundaries and making social comment.

 

Art is there to create a reaction the fact this thread exists validates the artists work.

 

Whether its good art or not is where the argument should be.

 

A lot of arty folk think a nice watercolour of some hills is more craft than art as art needs to stimulate the emotions.

At the POTY awards last season, in the auction was a piece of her 'work'. It was a crap tiny little sketch on a piece of paper. She hadn't coloured it in or anything. When I say crap, I mean crap. A 5 year old could've done something better. The only emotions stimulated within people I witnessed were raised eyebrows followed by, "What the fuck is that supposed to be?"

 

If art is turning out shit drawings and emptying my bin onto the floor so that folk can stand around making up possible reasons for why the banana peel is is half in and half out of the empty crisp packet, will someone please tell me how I can get a job as an artist? I'll be ace at it.

Saw Bolton schools art projects for their GCSE's on display at Bolton University last night. My daughter had 10 pieces on show.

All the schools had obviously been given different projects to work on. So hard to judge like-for-like.

 

But then you got to the Bolton School section..... Fuck me! The quality was on another planet as far as I was concerned. Some proper good stuff that you could see some toffs actually paying a few hundred quid for to hang in their games room, etc, etc.

 

Makes you realise how much of a good start the kids at Bolton School are getting.

 

Which makes me also think... is it worth the outlay as a parent? And how much is it these days?

I understand the point here but if I got my knob out in ASDA and waved it about i'm sure i'd get an emotional reaction, would it be art though, good or bad? As for that unmade bed??!! What really bugs me with all this so called art is how much it goes for! Some folk clearly do have more money then sense.

 

Remember that Hirst shark in formaldehyde piece? How was that art yet the half cat in Bolton museum is well er just a museum piece?

 

Seriously, I do get that art should stir emotions but a lot of modern art is just simply trying to wind folk up, surely? - The bigger the controversy the bigger the price tag!? Two very different things in my opinion. Im not sure id call Mr glitter here or any of the aforementioned art. So there!

This all reminds me of an old joke

 

At the National Art Gallery in Dublin, a husband and wife were staring at a portrait, rubbing their chins deep in thought. The painting depicted three black men totally naked sitting on a park bench. Two of the figures had black knobs, but the one in the middle had a pink knob.

At the nice new office where I worked from 1988 to 2001 the chairman was 'into' art. There was a catalogue of prints available for individual offices, and some original work in the main corridors. (I took about 3 seconds to choose 50 coloured pencils depicted on an open rail goods truck, as I couldn't be bothered / spare the time to read through the catalogue).

 

On the edge of the staff dining room was a crappy painting. Someone (not me, but I do know who) discreetly added a sticker saying "Rainy Day, by Kirsty aged 4".

 

Then one day the Chairman held a soiree for the artists, and the true "artist" of "Rainy Day ..." was very unamused!

Ok without deliberately trying to be childish it makes me ask the question, 'Who says?'. I mean if art is adjudged to be art because of an argument then im really not sure how anyone can honestly call something art.

 

I could say that exposing myself next to the Haribos was to highlight the lack of understanding and paranoia people have towards paedophiles. I know that's bollocks but it's a reason and then whose to say it is or isn't art? The reality is everyone would know that im an 'attention seeker', at best, and my original point was that such methods seem to be being employed to promote a piece so that it hikes the price up.

 

To me, and this is always going to be subjective, that is not art.

People talk about it because it's a fucking unmade bed and how can that be art.

 

So, if the idea is that something is art because it makes people talk about it, then does it really count if the only reason people are talking about it is because they're saying it's not actually art?

 

As long as there are attention seekers like Emin, galleries that host shit like this, folk who will stand around rubbing their chins and making stuff up (see pink knob joke above) ... and more importantly people who'll shell out ??? for this 'work' then it will continue to exist.
