"seeing The Game Out..."

I'm a little worried by Dougie's assessment of yesterdays game and what he see's as the problem!

My opinion is that we have drawn at home to Barnsley and lost at home to Ipswich BECAUSE we were 1 up and spent the rest of the game trying to see the game out!

Apart from anything else, it's extremely boring to watch this seeing the game out!

Lets have a policy/mantra/philosophy of increasing our lead or burying sh*t teams by playing the same way throughout the game!

Oh and did I mention how boring I'm finding the home games at the moment :-)

I've got a mate who is a Palace fan (yes, he is an ST holder) - when we got Freedman, he said we need to get used to winning games 1:0, as Freedman believes in scoring on the break and then defending a lead, as opposed to going out and mullering teams.

My mate does also say that Freedman is a good manager, and he reckons he'll get us promoted in the next couple of season

Your mate is correct about the first part and could well turn out to be correct about the second. But do we really need to do this in games when we are massive favourites to win the game. I'd have like to have seen us carry out this policy when in the Premiership and playing teams much much better than us.

I'm gonna get slated for this but I think we would have gotten 2 wins from the past 2 home games with the previous manager.

I'm not saying I'd have preferred to keep him or that I don't think Dougie will succeed where Coyle failed... just that at the moment we have better players than Barnsley and Ipswich and to try to see the game out in our own backyard is embarrassing and extremely boring!

Can we not have a balance of both styles ... or am I just being a moaning c*nt who is never satisfied :-)

interesting to look at Palace's home results when he was there and since he left

when he was there:

2-3

2-1

1-1

3-2

4-3

2-2

no clean sheets and only win by the odd goal, never by more (same goes for their away wins)

since he left

2-0

5-0

3-0

3-0

seems they've been let off the leash somewhat

would def seem to lean toward the "get a lead and leave it at that" mentality, though cannot be arsed looking into when the goals were scored to see if thats how it is

Are we really massive favourites to win these games? - we're a mid-table Championship at the minute, nothing more, nothing less. Sadly we still have fans who continue to claim that we have the best squad in the division......fuck knows why though. I think Freedman will get it right eventually and get us promoted, but it won't be this season.

the "get a lead and leave it at that" mentality

Pretty much the words my mate used

That mentality might be OK with a set of players who didn't already have a flaky, losing mentality of their own.

Bored

he said we need to get used to winning games 1:0

I'd quite like to get used to that.

Mourinho used to get a two goal lead before he declared.

I notice in the BEN comments from Andrews and Dougie that the fans also need to learn about seeing the game out and players to learn to not be influenced by other messages from the crowd.

pretty sure the messages weren't "lunge in" and "spill it"

Yes I read that and my immediate thoughts were "oh do fuck off andrews" not because the fact our crowd moan and grown if we don't pass it forward every 3rd pass at least but more the fact what we dont need now is a new nigel reo big mouth antagonising the not rights in our crowd - if we start playing with a level of sophistication that we can cotnrol a game and comfortably see it out 1-0 I'll be a very happy man because the current squad / form it seems to depend whcih side of bed they get out of as to whether they turn up and it's mostly the wrong side

Edited: cos it was un bloody fair!

wasn't that the tactic of a certain mr megson?

I agree , hanging on for grim death is what it always seemd to feel like under Megson ,

However I do think that being 'able to see a game out' is an important part of any teams tactics, but I have always thought that teams who were very good at seeing games out were very good passing teams who were also very confident in their own ability to keep possession and not let the other side create a chance in the last 10 mins.

Unless you are out of sight with the scoreline then you know the opposition are gonna throw the kithchen sink at you late on and being able to see the game out and not conceding from the 80th min on is very important, late goals are soooo morale sapping .

This does not mean I advocate going one nil up on 15 mins then trying to defend like Spartans for the remaining 75, thats just madness.
