Starbucks - Boycott?

I know plenty of you wouldn't give them the steam off your latest brown trout.... but now they've been "outed" for tax avoidance (think we are talking £millions), will those who do like a fancy coffee be giving them a swerve?

As a UK business & tax payer it pisses me off that they've paid 0% in tax!! Fuckers!

If anything they should be the cheapest on the High St.

There need be no connection between the idea as it was conceived and the way it was mis-applied by later generations. There is no resemblence between what Beveridge recommended and what we have today.

  • So we have some big companies not paying UK taxes and paying their staff a wage which has to be subsidized by the state via working tax credits & the like. Capitalist economies aren't meant to be

Who, or what, are 'Class Action'? I've always seen Starbucks as being one rung up from McDonalds anyway :) and thus, have never frequented the place, aside from once or twice probably, passing through a train station, and unaware of whom owned the chain I was buying coffee from. Sometimes, just sometimes - the crusty, unwashed 'smash the state' trustafarian lot are in the right, agreeing with them once in a while doesn't mean you'll start smoking roll-ups and living in a squat with a german vegan who's permanently wearing the same stripy jumper (and who replies to the name of 'Beanzi'.)

I'll stick to Nescafe, if I need better I take some fresh beans, grind em and chuck em in the cafeteria. Cost of all the raw materials and equipment is probably cheaper than 4 or 5 visits to those type of shops.

However imo any business operating in the UK should pay UK business tax.

Get some 'Best-In' coffee from your corner shop, 99p a jar and it pisses all over Nescafe.

So, when Starbucks take us all for mugs, are these mugs Short, Tall, Grande, Venti or Trenta?

No Starbucks are franchised, none at all. They wouldn't be able to run their accounting like this if they were. One of the only (if not the only) coffee companies not to franchise.

Really?

47 mins in, Starbucks franchise holder fighting his corner as to why he shouldn't be boycotted.

Not sure of that one Traf, I have, however, been told that 'Trenta' is the size they use when they go for a piss in the staff cubby-hole/cloakroom - they then tip said piss into the sink in the shop...I've heard.

Perhaps that's why the taps are always running Daz?

Trenta is the pint and a half mug they do in the good old U S of A.

Is he a franchisee or a licensee?

The rumours are true, Starbucks is to franchise in the UK! Following a period of exceptional trading, coffee giant Starbucks has recently revealed it will open its first Starbucks franchise in the UK before the end of 2012...........

.....................

Starbucks currently operates its own stores and via licenses. It will however be introducing Starbucks franchise opportunities within the UK to enable stores to be opened in small towns where a franchisee would be able to contribute their local knowledge.

Starbucks has indicated that it plans to open 200 Starbucks franchises in the UK by 2017.

So the great unwashed will be doing people out of jobs.

There's just been a report on the news...

"This is Shoreditch, where once the hiss of milk steaming and the mighty clink of porcelain loomed large. Now, this community lies in ruins, thousands of baristas, for whom the industry of dispensing of to-go coffee was passed down through the generations, lie on the scrapheap..."

I'm beginning to think you've got Starbucks in your stock portfolio No Balls? :)

Not according to their own website.

1. Does Starbucks franchise?

Starbucks does not franchise operations and has no plans to franchise in the foreseeable future. However our Seattle’s Best Coffee brand does offer franchise opportunities to qualified and select applicants, using a predefined set of criteria and focusing on multi-unit franchisees with a proven track record of success. Happen I'm wrong though. Original point being individual franchises couldn't avoid tax in the same way.

Whilst I'm pissed off that the multinationals play to different (legal) rules than folk who run small businesses and have the Revenue kicking their arses 24/7, don't kid yourselves that these smaller indepentant places are declaring all the income and paying the full whack of tax.

Businesses with predominantly 'cash' trading activities... :glare: :glare: :glare:

It's going to be a pound for me a pound for the accounts, a pound for me a pound for the accounts....need to pay the Saturday girls....cash in the pocket, no employers NI...

That's true, but how many more would go under if they played by the book? How many live in mortal dread of HMRC? One could also argue their profits stay within our economy, somebody with a small butty shop is unlikely to bank in Grand Cayman.

As for franchisees, now they want to play that card, previously they were happy to accept the fringe benefits like reduced stock costs etc. Now it could go tits up they're coming with the "I've sunk my life savings into this..." line.

I'm sure the other owners of independent shops, that have gone under due to unfair competition, had invested all their money too.

Oh by the way, Youri, I has a salted caramel on the way to work this morning :D

Did you not read what I told Traf about the 'trenta' cups and the staff cubbyhole? Oh dear :)

If you CAN'T play by the book, your model ain't right, your business is badly managed or your basically a crook.

Rules exist and should be adhered to by everyone. Those who don't should be fucked in the arse.

But those who are struggling due to downturn should be advised appropriately and properly.

Yeah you're right, let's just keep pecking each other like f*cking battery hens...

The rules, whilst technically adhered to, are also bent and warped to the limit, by those who can afford to engage accountants who are cute enough to exploit every loophole. It isn't a level playing field, therefore the rulebook is flawed.

You're right but on the other side is homers argument. If everyone played by exactly the same rules then its survival of the fittest but as often as not I don't think it is.

I price and often lose work against shithouses who don't have adequate plant competency and training certs to do the job which cost a small fortune to keep up to date.

But they're cheap.

And that's what folk want regardless of what their corporate bollocks tells you.

I was wondering whaere you stood on that type of "tax avoidance"

Same here

We spend endless wedges of cash on fucking bollocks certificates, training and courses just so we stick a poster on the brew room wall that no one gives the slightest fuck about.

We do our bid, every client points out how good the bid is and how we've clearly done our background work, strived hard to get our ISO's, CSCS, SSSTS, PASMA, X Y and fucking Z. Then they give the work to some shonky twat whose company is in its 23rd incarnation because they hit the bottom line with their quote.

It makes you hope some cunt gets maimed on the job, but of course it'd be some perfectly innocent sparky earning an honest crust. Not the cunt who would disappear into the night as soon as the accident happened.

But hey, let's all go on strike.
