I've read loads of books both pro and anti Thatcher and her policies (and I don't mean in the last 24 hours) and the divide she created in the 80's got me interested in history and politics. I have a pretty negative opinion of her but I can see why some defend her.

One man's meat is another man's poison.

One thing is for sure, social mobility has decreased since Thatcher, I doubt we'll be seeing someone of her relatively humble beginnings as PM any time in the near future. For now Britain will be...

"Ruled by unexceptional men who have had an exceptional education."

I heard that soundbite somewhere a few months ago, I think it's a good 'un.

If social mobility has decreased, and I don't think it has, as many people can move quickly, it is because of the comprehensive education system, designed to keep people in their place

Or the benefit culture that stops people from having to give a shit about doing well for themselves

Yes, and that

For which Mrs T has to take quite a lot of the blame, mind.

I agree, the very people who used the Grammar school system then kicked the ladder out from under the next generation. Comprehensive schooling has proven to be, despite the best efforts of many teachers (contrary to popular belief) comprehensively shit - a 'one size fits all' attempt at an egalitarian approach that fails almost everyone. As long as there's covert 'cool' in having a 'don't give a shit about school' attitude - then bright kids from poor backgrounds will never prosper unless there's a strong guiding hand behind them.

I wish we'd stop getting so worked up about it, they're fucking lost a lot of this generation, write them off. There's got to be a focus on basic skills and training in schools in the future, get the fucking fundamentals right in a lot of cases (basic economics, cooking, reading/writing and, dare I suggest it, deportment?)...

If some c*nt wants to 'exist' on £50 to £100 a week (to spend - rather than in total) then they're missing out. I pity them. Would anyone who's in the 'lazy cunts should get a job' camp actually employ any of these 'man-children' (and women-children)? Would you f*ck, and who'd blame you?

I'd seriously consider rewarding them for not breeding too - despite you poo-poohing my visionary plan t'other month. :)

See I disagree with that.

Since she started twatting miners and eating kids we've had 30 years, two booms, two recessions, and went from the sick man of Europe to the worlds 4th largest economy (and arguably back again).

Ups and downs, opportunities and failures.

Regardless of who did what, anyone who spent all that time out of work is either severely disabled or is one bone idle cunt.

The people you're describing are the underclass we all know and love, who will always be out of work no matter how many jobs there are. People were out of work - by choice - all the way through the peaks and troughs you describe. It will be a struggle for anyone to separate the high unemployment her policies caused and higher levels of dependency on benefits. Her govt wanted to spin the figures and shoved lots of people who were on unemployment benefits onto long term incapacity payments, hence taking the unemployed and classifying them as unable to work. Whole communities thrown on the scrapheap and a generation of men with nowhere to get work. Written off. They then bred and in part created those you're on about and who we all know and love. The wealth she created landed primarily in the laps of the richest 5% or so. None of it filtered through to those communities whose industries had gone up in blue smoke. You cannot preside over mass unempoyment and avoid spending money on welfare unless you want people to starve.

At one stage in the 80s Mrs T was paying either unemployment or incapacity benefits to over 6 million people.

Then Labour should have put it right and didn't because who wants to voluntarily add 30% or so to the unemployment figures? The current lot are doing it now. Unemployment is going down, officially, becasue people are getting a few hours a week of part time work, or in some cases are taking zero hour contracts.

Thatcher spent more of the tax payers money than Blair ever did. Allegedly.

Now this is what carps me, the Thatcher family were loaded, she was minted on her speeches after she left Number 10, her son was an arm's dealer who became a multi millionare, her dowter must have had a bob or two, and now they want the taxpayer to foot the £ 10 million bill for the funeral !!!, fucking hell.

Complicated, but broadly correct. One of the sad facts about her reign was that a lesser proportion of the spending was on public services because she was spending so much on the massive welfare bill 3.6 million unemployed people created. She also allowed benefits to rise with inflation every single year she was in charge.

Getting quite a bit of coverage down here. I wonder if the street partying low lifes (all too young to remember) would take kindly to shivering round a candle at night on a regular basis, walking past rat infested piles of rubbish on the streets or leaving corpses unburied?

The PM we had to have sorted it.

It's my belief that she cared for each of us more than you could ever imagine.

She cared about our future, our futures, our ambition. She wanted our personal success more than many people did themselves. She didn't want people to waste their lives, to be stuck in a dead end job. She wanted lives to be fulfilled. She believed in the potential of each individual, and that people could make something of their lives. This contrasts somewhat with the socialist view that people need help, to be nannied through life and aren't good enough to make it themselves.

Her view gets my vote.

lovely sentiment, but there will always be 'dead end' jobs or jobs that must be done.

i don't think Thatcher gave a flying fuck about the general population.

her view doesn't get my vote.

F*cking lazy bastards, they should've shown some initiative - dug their own holes, gone down Raikes Lane (or the equivalent tip near them) hooked up a generator or got a brazier going in the backyard.

That's the trouble with that generation, they needed nannying.

Give over Bolty, it was quite intimate in the pubs with candlelight with the ladies in the 70s.

....and I'll bet you're still at it? ;)

I'll not mourn her passing, but we should have some class, death is something we shouldn't mock

Very well said, sir. Have a +1.

What disturbs me so much is that someone like Myra Hindley dies and there's barely a peep from people, yet everyone knows what she did without having to do any real research ... yet a political figure dies as an old lady and people are having parties and singing about dancing on her whilst not having the foggiest apart from what their parents told her or what they've read on Facebook.

Broken Britain.

I'm not sure they "want" the tax payer to foot the bill. Anyway, they announced this morning that they will be contributing towards the funeral expenses and more details will be released later, so before we start kicking off at how much this funeral is costing the tax payer, why don't we wait and find out exactly what that cost actually is

Braindead Britain.

Just out of interest M, who are "they" ?

You think it's her family who are wanting this grand funeral because they're too tight to pay for one?

I'd imagine her kids and grandchildren would just like to bury their mum/grandma with some dignity, which everyone should have the righ to do. You can bet there will be plenty of fucktards who won't allow them to do this though.

I'm already cringeing at the thought of the bedsheet brigade who'll be out on the day of her funeral. I predict a riot.

Anybody, and I mean anybody who decides it's a good idea to try and have some sort of protest at the funeral next week is nothing short of utter, utter scum
