January 31, 201412 yr Zico et al, how much should it cost for a local business to promote itself? Yell want something like £36 a month. Company I know charge £125 basic - up to £250 per month. Depends on the business and what goals you are trying to achieve. At first I thought £250 was a lot. But when demonstrated that a local Chesterfield settee company spent that and sold 4-5 units extra per month…. it was soon eclipsed by very tidy profits.

January 31, 201412 yr Is that realistic for a sole trader possibly turning over a couple of grand a month? Not worked with SEO types since I moved jobs but they used to offer a flexible service, the more you paid the more they could do for you. Think the basic started out around £15-20 a month and you could scale it up from there
January 31, 201412 yr Author That sounds more realistic, can anyone point me in the direction of someone who offers this kind of price?
January 31, 201412 yr That sounds more realistic, can anyone point me in the direction of someone who offers this kind of price? We used to use this lot, but (judging by the website) it appears they've moved on a lot since I last dealt with them. Still, no harm dropping them a line
January 31, 201412 yr Waste of money But I would say that as we only offer PPC Although it does depend on the purpose of your website . Edited January 31, 201412 yr by HomerJay
January 31, 201412 yr I think SEO is the biggest con going. You spunk money on it, google change the rules and you have to start again.
January 31, 201412 yr I think SEO is the biggest con going. You spunk money on it, google change the rules and you have to start again. The conspiracy theorists could also argue that google want you to fail at SEO so you fuck it off and use PPC instead.

January 31, 201412 yr I found (again, old job so 18 months out of date) that PPC worked a lot better as it's based on results. SEO you pay your money and take your chances, a lot of it is common sense anyway tbh
January 31, 201412 yr on par with accounts, estate agent, recruitment agencies & peado's. DIY. Ha ha ha
February 1, 201412 yr After the last week I'll add chiropractors And those working in other made up industries like "technical furniture"
February 1, 201412 yr Seo is changing and a lot is now basically marketing and pr, and ensuring you have a technically sound website Avoid anyone who sells you on the premise of ranking well A local business like a joiner or a plumber shouldn't pay over £100 to compete online A dentist could easily pay £2000 a month to compete

February 1, 201412 yr Is that realistic for a sole trader possibly turning over a couple of grand a month? Guess not but could be difference between a couple of grand and 4/5 grand in which case its money well spent. Anyone with a bit of common sense should be able to generate business themselves via FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, Wways, email, etc. "Share our page & get 10% discount / put into a draw for an iPad, etc". Saw a very small business the other day - FB page was dire. Website was even more dire. But they had 49,000 likes on FB. That's got to be better than any SEO campaign.
February 1, 201412 yr Author 49000 liked just to win an ipad, not from potential customers = pointless. I've come to the opinion that if business is slow but you can't be bothered to promote yourself then maybe it's time to be an employee rather than businessperson.
