i agree with you in one way

 

all i would say is that clubs have shown they can't run sensible businesses

 

and 2, if you don't get promoted, thats when the shit potentially hits the pan

 

 

 

my other view, these are generally private businesses and should be able to borrow/invest in whatever way they want

 

ie why the fcuk should city not spend whatever they want

The problem is that you get owners who stick a load of money in, sign players on massive wages and then get bored and disappear leaving the club with a load of debt that it can't repay.

 

FFP allows owners to invest in the infrastructure of the club. They can build bigger grounds for example to create greater revenue to re-invest in the club.

 

There's nothing to stop City's owners doing that which is why they're expanding the ground and developing the surrounding area. At least when they sell up, they'll leave some sort of legacy there.

Is it not getting a little like the Rugby League scenario? They have been through this and are now just seeing the error of their ways by allowing promotion back in.

But It's going to be crucial to invest in the right areas in future, rather than just relying on attendances alone. 

 

You could argue that clubs like City will never compete with Utd's global turnover, regardless of whether they're playing in front of 62,000 every home game.

 

In the future they'll have to rely on bringing through their own players which will enable them to spend a greater proportion of their turnover on fewer players, so they can still compete for the really big names. That's why they've invested so heavily in their academy.
