it may just be me, but I always think that these cyclists who manage to film themselves being shouted at, knocked over, pushed etc - are dying for someone to kick off just so they can film it, and half the time antagonize folk with their arrogant cyclist superiority

from what i can see in the video, the guy is just crossing the road, she comes past giving it "please don't knock me off", then gives him the finger (according to the article) after he said "shut up", presumably because he had not intention of knocking her off

 

so he chases her and pushes her off for giving him shit

 

he shouldn't  have done that, but she didn't have to give him any shit in the first place by the looks of the video

long story short, I think a lot, not all, cyclists are either too arrogant or not confident enough to be riding the streets, and this means they rub folk up the wrong way, and bring it on themselves

Absolutely. That's why I don't bother with road riding now. Add in traffic levels and remembering that being twatted by a car hurts I've come to the conclusion that it's not worth it.

A councillor I know from round here described the roads as third world in this area.

 

He's not wrong. Driving to and from home every day with a thousand litres of water in the back is like driving on the surface of the moon.

There was some report that said our road network ranked 29th in the world, just pipping Namibia at 30.

Aye, currently on a lovely new Thameslink train. From Zone 4 to Kings Cross direct 40 mins. Yes it get crowded but they are built now for standing passengers, so it’s never uncomfortable.

 

But it’s expensive. So, I don’t always buy into the south has it much better than the north narrative.

They should do it safely and in accordance with the rules of the road, shouldn't they? 

 

Of course they can overtake, just like cars, but if I pull out of my lane to overtake a car and get rammed up the arse as I didn't look that's my fault.  Are you saying it should be different for cyclists?

 

I'll say it again, The roads aren't adequate but that isn't the fault of folk who drive cars - many cyclists seem to think it is.

I tend to work on the assumption everyone is a cunt til they show otherwise.

I heard recently that councils have a pot of money set aside for folk who incur damage to their car driving over a pothole or similar

 

all you have to do, is take a photo of the pothole and copy of invoice for cost of repairs, and they refund you

 

though they won't if the pothole has been marked for repair (i.e. has a yellow circle sprayed round it)

 

can't say I've heard of this or know anyone personally who's done it, but the bloke who told was adamant it's true and knew someone who had claimed and received money

There's 2 pots of money that the council receives one for strategic surfacing of the main roads which comes from central government and one much smaller pot that is for estate roads and emergency repairs which comes mainly from council tax.

 

Another factor is the use of a cheaper and quicker method of surfacing rather than the traditional hard wearing asphalt. The cheaper stuff can be driven on much sooner than asphalt and is less labour intensive to lay but only lasts a fraction of the time.

Someone I worked with did it once and got money back.  Took a photo with two baked bean tins in the hole, the whopper

They have something called Bikeability in primary schools.  Good idea and they learn on the roads.

The French use em on their motorways.

 

Planings from over here are starting to be more widely recycled back into more tarmac.

 

It used to go to local sports clubs for their car parks and access roads and on near by unadopted back streets. As it used to cost to dump it.

 

I'm sure some still does but if manufacturers are taking it back to recycle then I'd imagine there's a cost offset.
