  • Its a pointless debate on here mate. Religion is the root of all evil on here and without it everything would be great.  Not particularly religious my self but if people have choice and want to pract

Recent studies have shown that atheists aren't the minority.   Personally I think that imposing a religious worldview on an impressionable young mind is the least desirable of the two alternatives

  • Fuck religeon off in school and swap that time for PE so they don't all end up looking like fucking Buddahs.

Faith should be kept as far away from the education system as possible. May is a God botherer though and is all for it.

There's some shocking stories of faith schools in this country, all faiths too.

Spot on!

There's nowt wrong in any school that is well led, properly regulated offering excellent education irrespective whether it is a faith school or not. Clearly this school isn't one of those

Even if they teach intelligent design and armageddon?

My kids went to Turton high. Certainly not a faith school. However, their Faith and Ethics (was RE) teacher was a Muslim woman and they learned plenty about Islam but jack shit about other cultures and beliefs.

Even if they teach intelligent design and armageddon?

Like i said, if they abide by the curriculum; are well led and regulated so that the extremist nonesense is not taught then any school is just fine.

We've evolved enough not to need religion to tell us not to kill your brother or covet thy neighbours donkey, there's societal ethics for that. Indoctrinating kids isn't required for an excellent education. You can do that at home.

We disagree on this point. I think that teaching kids abiut a deity who will condemn them to eternal anguish for transgressing a 2000+ year old middle eastern text is - you know - a bit child abusey.

If you don't want your child to have a religious education then send them to a secular school, it's quite simple. If there are problem schools then the authorities will weed them out and close them down. We are all entitled to our opinions and we have choices in life but to enforce your views, by closing all faith schools, on others is exactly what you are arguing against.

The kids don't get that choice.

Utter bollocks! But like you said we don't agree on this so no point in debating it as we will go round in circles...again!

The kids don't get that choice.

So the answer is give them the choice at 18???

What is utter bollocks? So you think it is acceptable to teach kids that there's a deity who will condemn them to eternal anguish for transgressing a 2000+ year old middle eastern text?

No. Keep it in the religious establishments/home. Not the school.

That is what secular schools are there for, to cater for the non-religious. I thought our society was about pro-choice and not about having things imposed on many families are that perfectly happy with the status quo.

How about they're all secular and if you want to teach them about Jesus or Mohammed or Zeus you can do it at home?

You are missing the point. The child doesn't have the choice as they must go to the school a parent has decided. If religion was kept in the place of worship or within those who wish to preach/learn about religion and not forced upon the children during their education then that'd be pro-choice.

Why is it needed in school?

If Kent & I agree then there must be something in this.

Why not give families a choice? Seems like a sensible approach to me rather than imposing the will of the minority

Do faith schools teach about other faiths like state ones are supposed to?

Genuine question as I don't know.

Not too sure I'm a fan of re to be honest as it was boring and meaningless when I was at school, and my lad seems to view his current re studies as a bit shit. Perhaps paying lip service to meet government rules which defeats the object.

I don't think learning about Religion, i.e. Different faiths and there origins etc. is particularly bad considering 85% of the world believe in some sort of Religion.

I wouldn't however allow the practising of Religion in School.

I can only speak as a former school governor at a catholic primary and then secondary school. The RE curriculum should be broad based including the teaching of other faiths. The RE Inspector specifically deals with this in their separate report.

If done properly then fair enough. Not sure having a teacher heavily into a particular religion works.

Not particularly religious my self but if people have choice and want to practice a faith without chucking it in people's faces then why not?

Regarding NB's point. Surely it's the parents decision to decide this when the kids are 5 year old like the parents decide pretty much everything else at 5 years old?

They didn't teach about other religions when I went to church school in the 90s.

Things might have changed.

Where most kids were learning about other religions we were learning about different branches of Christianity.

By the time the compulsory GCSE in RE (actually more Christian studies) came round I was fucked off with it so gave daft answers.

If folk want to be religious then go for it but keep it out of schools.
