This Day In 1977

Another classic game from the memory bank, Everton at home in the second leg of the League Cup semi final.

If memory serves well, we queued up on a freezing cold Sunday morning for tickets and the queue was huge, took us hours to get tickets, and for the only time in my life we had tickets for the south terrace of the Manchester Road Paddock.

If folk thought Newcastle was a big crowd then this was something entirely different, you couldn't bleeding move in Burnden Park that night, it was crammed to the rafters.

Around 51,000 squeezed into Burnden, Everton were given the home section of the Embankment, which now was accustomed to having segregation barriers down the middle.

My view from the South side of the Manny Road terrace was piss poor, I was virtually nestled against the barrier to the Lever End.

I can't recall too much of the match to be honest, but remember Duncan MacKenzie's penalty miss and a problem with the floodlights on the Embankment.

The stick out memory for me personally of the night was at the end and a small party of Evertonians in the Manchester Road Wing stand celebrating and singing "Que Sera Sera"

Bastards robbed us of our Wembley dream when a cup final meant something to the ordinary fan. Never liked them since that day and never eaten an Everton toffee since.

The Luton cup match was another of those games for us nostalgics...39,000 packed in, so glad I grew up in that era.

You're probably right, my memory is pretty scratchy these days.

Just looked it up myself..I'm older than I thought!

P, am I right in thinking that a mob of Spurs came into the Lever End during the cup replay in 77/78 ?

That's another vague memory I have from that era. Seem to recall they were escorted out alongside the Paddock and met with all sorts of abuse, missiles and meat n tater pies.

They came in the Burnden paddock at the end only to be met by our lot piling out, they beat a hasty retreat...not sure if they went in the Lever end though S.

I just remember hairs on the back of my neck on end as the teams came out, atmosphere like no other I can recall. Bob Latchford header and a terrible penalty at the embankment by McKenzie. We didn't really have a sniff that I can remember and that was unusual at home in those days.

I seem to recall the penalty was for somert and fuck all. Someone in the crowd said McKenzie had missed it on purpose as he's a sportsman. I also remember looking at him as though he was pissed; which he may have been.

Didn't McKenzie say in an interview later that he missed it deliberately ?

Lying twat was just an overrated turd.

Chatted to him at a sportsman's dinner at that hotel on Higher Bridge Street years ago (think it was a Moat House at the time) and he reckoned that he missed it as he was shitting it - massive crowd, one step from Wembley, etc, etc

Funny day that. Luton turned up dressed like Clockwork Orange Droogs apart from a few who had sprayed their fro's an orangey gold colour.

All kicked off near Orlando Bridge. Chased one of em round cobbled streets on the same side as Bolton Tech. The git hid in a back yard and then twatted me with a coal shovel when I kicked the back gate open (not a euphemism) knocking out a front tooth! Live by the sword, die by the sword.

Everton game I was in my usual place in the Burnden Paddock. Few scousers in there keeping a very low profile but you could spot them a mile off.

Like most, after Goodison I was convinced we were going to Wembley. Massive disappointment.

Peter Nicholson threw the ball to an  Everton player as it had gone out of play & he was out of position as the same player threw the ball to Goodlass the Everton winger who crossed for Latchford to score , that one naïve moment cost us dear in a tight game.

The Luton crowd was phenomenal at the time , all our cardboard cutouts turned out for that one !

They were all saying the same thing on Monday at work though 'not bin for years & wont be going back either'

Jonah lightweights !

Bolton fans behaved like Russian Hoolies that night v Everton.
