There’s only so many pictures they can print of the Prince having a coffee or taking his kids going to school and they will soon bore of him (see other princes, footballers, movies stars etc).

The Royal Family as an institution understands this, and knows they'd likely lose any public fight against them, so does what it can to play the game and avoid provoking them - dignified silences, avoiding politics, "never complain, never explain" etc. Harry and Meghan adopted a different strategy and tried to take them on directly: a brave move but probably ill-advised. The media battle intensifies and both parties end up where they are. I think that difference in media strategies is a pretty big factor in all this.

The firm and the media have a well oiled relationship and there is a reason why Kate is portrayed one way and Megan the other in the exact same circumstance.
