Decimalisation

Fifty years ago today.

My first purchase in "new money" were some Neon Tetras from Lilliput Aquarium on Chorley Old Road

My dad, who was known for telling tall tales reckoned prices stayed the same...

For example, if a pint was 8d then one could buy thirty pints pre-decimal (240d) for a pound. On D-Day the same pound would only get twelve and a half pints.

Surely this was bollocks?

He always explained economics in 'pints in the pub' terms - and explained navigation using pubs as landmarks, much to the annoyance of my mam, especially when I was 'of age' and me and the old man would discuss how to best get from A-Z using pubs as points of navigation.

"You're just like him, you know all the pubs..! 😡"

😀

I don't remember it, obvs. A shilling is simple enough, 5p, 20 to the pound. How the fuck did we ever get 12 pence to the shilling? Also, what ever happened to the 2 and a half pence coin? Was that purely because it was half a shilling, post-decimalisation? Was there a half-shilling coin before? Fuck knows.

off the top of my head, Farthing (1/4d already discontinued), halfpenny (1/2d), penny (1d), thruppeny bit (3d), tanner (6d), shilling (12d), half a crown (30d or 2and 6)

1/2p = 1d, 1p = 2d, 2p = 5d, 5p = Shilling, 10p = 2 shillings, 50p = ten bob note.

so an 8d pint would have cost 3 1/2p in decimal, probably rounded up to 4p 'cos they were sneaky like that

Old money sounds like a load of characters from a Dickens novel

Obviously bullied in to it by euro beuaricats.

Why all that bollocks? Converting each Dickensian character into 'new' money?

Was it beyond the wit of man to simply state...

There were 240 pennies in the pound - now there are 100 pennies to the pound.

Simple.

I always thought old 'uns were supposed to be good at mental rithmatic ( and reading and riting).

Simpletons.

No wonder the man found it so easy to keep us down.

I bet half the Jarrow march turned back after some wiley mill owner painted a '5' before the '280' on the 'LONDON 280 Miles ->' sign on the southbound road out of Jarrow.

I'm surprised the thick old racists, emboldened by Brexit, didn't try to bring back penny farthings, pecks, gils, chains, half fucking sixpences and 2 and 6 gets you a quarter of a heavypound of British Spanish.

Beer was about 3/6 a pint (17p) when I first started. Pub navigation was natural as there was virtually a pub on every corner. I remember the outrage when Guinness went to 50p

i remember a 6pence size of a 5p

3/6...

Eh?

Twenty shillings in a pound, 240 pennies to the pound so twelve pennies in a shilling?

Therefore 3 (shillings) and six (pennies) must be 42p surely?

Where's 17p come from?

(Cue nonsensical ramblings no-one under 53 understands 😀).

3 shillings is 15p

Plus 6 pence = 2.5p

That's 17.5p

You had to be there, got a ticket stub somewhere Deep Purple Stalls Free Trade 7/6 (37.5p)

Yeah this is why it had to change, nonsense maths

Why all the stupid names?

Why not just have half a penny, penny, six pence, twelvepence etc.

What the fuck's a tanner ffs or half a crown?

Yeah, supposed to put a d after old pence and a p after new pence

From Wiki

Today, only two countries have non-decimal currencies: Mauritania, where 1 ouguiya = 5 khoums, and Madagascar, where 1 ariary = 5 iraimbilanja. However, these are only theoretically non-decimal, as in both cases the value of each sub-unit is too small to be of any practical use and coins of sub-unit denominations are no longer used.

A tanner was six old pence or 2.5 new pence, used to get a tanner bag of chips.

Half a crown was 2/6d or 12.5p... handy coin, looked nice

Wrong.

1d = 0.4166666667 new pence.

So 42d = 17.5 new pence.

Why do it all cockeyed - converting the new pence back to the stupid old currency.

"Ooarhh! Fifty new pence be thee four groats h'apenny and 2d left oer..."

Crackers.

No wonder everyone worked in th'mills. Thick as fuck.

If a tanner was six old pence what was a fucking sixpence then?

Probably half a shilling or sommat else irrelevant.

I can just about remember 1/2p's

The only thing one would buy in the entire world were tiny jelly bears from the penny tray.

Vaguely remember pound notes an' all.

I bet an old 50 pence piece felt huge to you

That’s just absolute fucking nonsense.

I bet Miami was front and centre pushing for decimalisation though.
