WW Ukraine refugees appeal

Right. I'm sure we're all feeling pretty useless at the mo - so I'm having a whip round amongst family and friends and dropping some stuff off at the Ukrainian Centre tomorrow night.

They're organising deliveries to the refugees fleeing into Poland. They're needing toys, nappies, sanitary towels, crayons, clean towels, first aid kits, sleeping bags, metal cups, thermal clothing, hair brushes, shampoos, toothbrushes, children’s clothes and bandages etc.

If anybody wants to chip in - just send me a PM and I'll send you my bank details. I'm going to do a big shop after work and see what I can get my hands on.

Will need to be by tomorrow though as they're only taking deliveries between 7 and 9 pm.

Realise loads of people will already be doing something similar so don't worry if you can't!

Thanks - Kent 🇬🇧🤝🇺🇦

We will be the judge of if they are tight fitting or not thank you very much.

Obviously kidding. One person on here has seen who she is. I trust they won't spill. I certainly won't be sharing any photos of her with you lot.

Easy 9/10

  • 1 month later...

After 57 days my Ukrainian guests have left. 46 mum, 17 lad

It's been one hell of an experience living with strangers from another country and also very challenging.

We paid for their flights over and picked them up from Bristol Airport. Gave them our en suited bedroom, sorted out bank accounts, phones, biometrics, doctors and English lessons.

Manged to help 14 of their friends from Kiev come over and settle close by.

Helped both gets jobs without even having interviews. Got them a car so we didn't have to ferry them around everyday. We've took them on holiday with us over May half-term and included them in our social activities.

I gave them access to everything I own and have built up over many years including my circle of friends and connections.

Sadly the one thing I couldn't do for them is host their daughter/sister who is due to come over sometime next month. I don't have another spare bedroom and this caused unrest and they seemed to be insluted by my decision. On Monday I was informed by the council that my guests were looking for a larger property to accommodate 3 of them.

Was told it could take 2 months for them to relocate. This last week has been unbelievably difficult living in the same house as them, it started to effect my daughter in a negative way so last night I told them to leave.

I've done my best to support two people I didn't know. I've received one payment of £350 from the council. It's cost me money and a shit load of my time.

So now it's time to lookafter my own family and not somebody else's.

You did your bit. If 95% of the stuff you’ve done for them is right but they only want to discuss the 5% you’ve (in their opinion) got wrong then it says a lot more about them than it does against you.

Fair fucks mate. You have provided a home that many wouldn't or couldn't and tried your best.

Some folk, regardless of where they are from, just aren't appreciative and it is unfortunate you seem to have helped out one of them.

Kinell, sorry to hear it didn't fully work out.

You've gone above and beyond and should be rightly proud of your efforts. Ultimately, family comes first and it sounds like you'll all be happier.

Last night was horrendous. Watching them gather their belongings made me feel awful. But I knew it was time.

Like I said... I didn't have to go the extra mile with the help I gave them but its hard not too when you can. I can't imagine moving to another country and having to set up everything with no help or support from a local. Throw in a different language and it becomes even harder.

Last night I think it only just hit them that from now on they're on their own and could probably end up far away from where everything has been set up for them.

They've been given hotel accommodation for the next few nights, a new host and  house will supposedly available early next week.

It's been a interesting couple of months, mostly enjoyable but I'll never be doing anything like this again... ever.

Fair play to you mate but this story is similar to many others that keep cropping up. Am I right in saying millions have now returned back home?

Not sure mate. I know a few around here went back once the Russians pulled out of Kiev.

I also know that the 5 welcome centres opened up here in Wales are close to capacity. Nearly all occupants have been there for months, unable to find a host.

With no fixed address they can't get their kids a school, get jobs etc.

It's a shame for them but I'm not surprised fewer people are offering to host.

And we never did get the photos 😉

Just caught up on this, the thread passed me by.

Ace work W84, unbelievable infact. Not many would have the nature, patience and all round set bollocks to do what you did. Fair play to you and your family. Fabulous people.

Shame it ended on a bit of a bad vibe but you can hold your head high for the rest of your life pal. You just cant account for people and their personalities, whatever the situation in life.
