this is what you're not getting. I'm not the one interpreting the numbers wrong, you are. I can show you stats for all attempted shots from in your own half and they will look like good numbers and worthwhile. That doesn't mean you keep on shooting from your own half because 5% of all shots form your own half are goals. They are worthless and no, my original point as i keep saying is that taking a short corner when the right time isn't the wrong thing to do because the man in the pub remembers sam allardyce scoring a header from 30 yards 30 years ago.

as I said, the first stats you find that back up your argument are correct but the ones that go against your opinion are wrong.

I don't want to sound like a politician and change your question but the key to understanding it is to looking at chances and shots created. It's impossible to say what percentage of short corners lead to goals. Where do you stop? after the first, second or third chance is created or when the ball goes out of play 3 minutes later? That's why its pointless quoting figures from goals from corners after the initial corners. Yes the percentage comes right down but that's the whole point of this. it shows just how poor a chance is directly from m a corner compared to a chance in open play. 4 out of 5 corners don't even lead to a shot on goal, only 1 in 5 does. of those shots on targets 1 in 10 are goals. which is the same figure for all shots in total (shots in the 6 yard box all the way to shots from 30 yards) a shot (not a header) in the 6 yard box in open play can be around the 40-45% mark the problem with corner shots is a large percentage of them are headers (which are the lowest quality shots you can have) and those in the 6 yard box are filled with between 16 and 20 players compared to a shot in open play. This explains why only 1 in 10 shots on target form corners are goals. This is the same figure as all shots (of low and high quality).

I'm not being funny but this is why I can't be arsed, what's the point when whatever the results you won't believe it. I experience this every day and when people don't want to believe they won't. They use stats that backs up their opinion and then dismiss stats when it goes against their opinion. What is it exactly you don't believe it. Do you think the numbers are wrong or do you just not want to admit what we have always thought is wrong?

ok, i understand. the point is you don't stop playing the low percentages but why would you not play a better percentage option when it is on? you play the lower percentage option when it is your best percentage chance surely?
  11. Garrp replied to Garrp's topic in Terrace Talk
I can tell you all the stats for each different shooting zones but i don't get what your point is. I think you're saying that just because something is a low percentage chance that you shouldn't stop doing it because it can lead to goals in other ways.

I don't want to do one of them multi quotes as it looks gay i have never argued that 'they can be indicative of a pattern of play, not a result, but how a game has gone, that's all' - so I don't know why you are changing the discussion to that? i have said how often goals are scored from corners and that people should stop whinging when our players have been clearly told to go and see if the short ball is the better option. I said this because lee and mavies were going short against charlton and the two or three times we did play it the usual moaners were whinging "get it in the fucking mixer, "why are we going short, we never score from them".

there's a subjective, human element to me saying the sky is red and grass is blue. the whole point of stats is to eliminate the human bias and what we think we see with the naked eye. it's ok having a hunch and saying corners are really good, i remember that header allardyce scored from 50 yards away, there are thousands upon thousands of games worth of data that tell us how often corners are scored.
  15. sounds like mason will play when fit.
  16. Garrp replied to Garrp's topic in Terrace Talk
does it bollocks, you're just scraping the barrel trying to argue against stats with opinion and emotion. you average around 6 corners a game each in an even game this is about as competitive a league as you can get so more even games there is roughly an even amount of corners there are exceptions like on Tuesday when we won the corner count 14:1 we got beat 2-1
  17. Garrp replied to Garrp's topic in Terrace Talk
but you are missing the point we already know what physiological pressure is worth, about 1 in 50. fuck all its just one of the many reasons why people think they are worth more than they are.
  18. Garrp replied to Garrp's topic in Terrace Talk
don't forget the goals you concede on the counter attack having your two centre backs up out of position. we've not even mentioned net goals

there was a thread on here about 6 months ago saying we were shocking at corners and we never score from them fwiw i make us one of the better teams in the division at corners quick look, Mills has had about 400 corners for us and scored 4 goals, if we presume they were all corners then 1 every 100 similar for wheater dawsons record was incredible but not sustainable, (i made it about 1 every 30 corners) he's only scored once for west brom in his career let's not forget. we've never played all 3 together who else has scored from a corner for us? we're probably better than average no one with the stats is saying you don't take corners, they are proving the point that they aren't worth as much as people believe and there is an advantage to be had taking a short corner when the opportunity arises.

I can't be bothered to argue the point but for anyone who is interested read the numbers game book, it explains every detail in there. the point is Lennon knows it anyway and this is part of his game plan. we will be seeing a lot more of us looking to see if the short ball is on. every corner last night we had Chungy and then mavies on the job. so please can we stop with the abuse when it does happen
