Dementia Care

Featured Replies

Serious one !

does anyone know how care works if a relative goes into a dementia care home ?

Got a relative who needs to go in being quoted £1200 a week for a decent one (his grand daughter is a district nurse so do have some insight on that)

Does anything get paid by NHS ? He has a house and some savings.

don't quote me on this, but as far as I know you pay for it youself until you run out of cash

think that's how it worked with my dad's home care as he had parkinsons - was on 3 visits a day by the end of it, something like 4-5K a month

they got consultancy and all that from various clinics and doctors in bolton plus prescriptions and that

and whenever he ended up in hopsital he always had to have time in laburnum lodge until he was fit to go home again, think that was covered by nhs as was part of his recovery from the time in hospital

but you pay for actual bespoke out of hospital care

Savings and the proceeds from a house sale need to be used to pay care home fees.

There is a benefit called attendance allowance which isn't means tested and someone  with dementia might get, but maybe only 70 per week.

It depends how bad the individual

My dad did 12 months, just short of 45k

We did get 12k back after his death as they accepted the last 3 months he had tipped over some medical threshold or other

His missus really does not want to put him In but his behaviour is getting more erratic and aggressive. He gets up in middle of the night and showers to go to work. He is 80 odd and not worked for years.  On other nights he just won’t go to bed and walks about mumbling. She is exhausted as when he does nap during the day she is scared to sleep in case he wakes and does something daft.

It is fucking tragic.

oh right, if he is married then his wife won't have to sell the house. They would have to use savings down to about £23k after which point the state would pay for care although not necessarily in the same home

My mum went in just before Xmas and I am currently in process of selling her house to help pay towards it. I presume you have a social worker for them? They tried to explain it to me but I still didn't really understand I just know I get a bill from the council every month which is paid out of her pension/savings and once the house is sold out of that too but im sure council pay some towards too as itn no where near 1200 a week. I also have to pay a top up of £40 a week out of my own pocket. Speak to the social worker.  I'm sorry to hear what your going through I wouldn't wish it on anyone and is the hardest thing I've ever had to do putting my mum in care but at least I know she is safe as she wasn't when she was living alone anymore.

It ii my missus Uncle and Auntie, so her mums sister. Her son, my missus brother is in and out of hospice with Cancer in his spine.

Right laugh at the moment over here.

Some folk think they can get around the care system cost by putting the parents house in the name of one or more of their kids names. It doesn't work, the local authorities will find out and they'll want their money back.

There are legal ways to protect your assets

My dad lived in a local home and they emptied over £200k out of his bank account, he had dementia.   Worst thing about it was he was tight as cramp with the pennies, so all that money saved by not being allowed the central heating on got gobbled up.

Isn't it seven years they can go back?

We have had it written into our will that when one of us dies the property will be shared with the remaining parent and 2 daughters so that if the remaining person goes into care the costs are not so great, I'm not too sure but I can look it up in the will, it cost us nearly 2 grand to have it done

Its costing us a right wedge, but put another way, 1 months care fees

I think its a bit shit, really

But why not if its an option

My mate was telling me the other day, his Mum now needs one to one care and the care home his Mum is in told him that he should be entitled to help financially because of her needs. It was costing around £1400.00 a week and now he says him and his brother will need to contribute around £200.00 a week now, it's a big relief for him because there is still plenty of equity left in his parents property and savings etc.

It's got to be done. After my dad died (had dementia) two years ago he left me and my sister half each in a DT's. I'm about to redo my will and my pot's going in one.

With the current rules, on the second person dying, capital gains tax will be payable if the house is not the primary residence.

That's one of the reasons we sold our house in Athy and moved in to my dads to make it my primary residence. I inherited half his house when my mum died in 2007 and would have had to paid a bit of CGT.

Catch up with you at the Sportsman's Dinner, leaned a lot about inheritance tax & trust funds in the last two years.
