Although outdated now I would still recommend Fred Ayre's books ... 'Kicked Into Touch', 'A Breath of Fresh Ayre' and 'Another Breath of Fresh Ayre'. The bit, (& I can't recall which book it

That was one of the first I read that got me into football books and the idea of "a season with" type stuff, what a great read.

"All Played Out" (now known as "One Night In Turin") by Pete Davies about Italia 90 ended up becoming my favourite football book of all, it just seems to capture what experiencing a World Cup from start to finish must feel like. Was really disappointed to find out the two authors of these dont actually get on that well!

Theres loads of books coming out now that tell the story of individual tournaments which I really like, not just the matches but social/historical backgrounds to them too that make good reading when theres a WC/Euros on the horizon. A few examples:

Blood On The Crossbar about 1978 WC

Euro 84: The Greatest Tournament You Never Saw

In The Heat Of The Midday Sun about 1986 WC

USA 94 The World Cup That Changed The Game

England, The English And Euro 96

I really want something similar about 2002 in Japan/Korea but the one that's out is a bit basic, just who won what rather than really digging into what it was like in the grounds and the host cities.

Oh, and one I'd really recommend: "The Card" by Steve Hill about a Chester fan who sets out to watch every game in a season, very funny.

That’s what you’ve been doing on your sabbatical 😉

Looking forward to it pal 👏

Not a football book, but Sir Bradley Wiggins book is a compelling and harrowing read.

I read The Miracle of Castel di Sangro every couple of years

Cheers! I actually think it's decent, which probably means its not 😂

Formatting it is a right faff. The last one isn't formatted very well at all its pretty untidy so I want to do it properly this time. Its harder than actually writing the thing!
