Interesting suggestion in the old age thread as to whether there’s anyone on here under the age of 30. I’m sure plenty of us started on here under that age, but it’s mad how habits have changed over the years and migration to social media etc. Think we’re quite fortunate to maintain such a busy community on here.

Anyroad, turned 39 a couple of weeks ago.

Work got my age wrong and decorated my desk and had a whip-round for my 40th. That isn’t until next year. Not sure whether or not I should consider that a win.

Fully expecting there to be no such thing as a state pension by the time I’m in my late 60s. Can’t say I’m putting away masses in my pension, but currently having the diet of Rab C Nesbitt should mean I’ll have enough to see my retirement through. Got life insurance, funerals sorted etc so wife will be sorted when I cark it.

You must be skipping the school years if you are 39.

i am 40 in February. Not really bothered by age now as I don’t intend on growing up. Just a shame I am heavily balding on top of being short and round.

You will never regret a penny you pay into your Pension.

More importantly you will never regret travelling.

Agreed. Due to my lack of money sense I got into debt and had to start claiming some of my private pensions early. We’re okay financially now but could have been much better off.

100 per cent agree about travelling. I had a decent job in sales and got to travel Europe from Iceland in the north west to Israel in the south east for free in the job.

Both first and second points are times I won’t forget. I hope.

Something daft like 1k a month gets paid into mine, only reason I've stayed teaching.

My estimated yearly income goes up a grand for each year I'm teaching. Earn it while you can n all that lot.

I was the same as you in  some ways... When I hit 40 I was living the fast lane and never thought about the future... I suppose live fast and die young was my mantra.

Then I took up flying and had to have a regular medical... I failed an annual check up and the examiner sat me down and gave me a bollocking about my lifestyle... I took it on board and since then I have never touched a Big Mac (the smell of them makes me retch these days) and haven't touched spirits such as gin and whiskey.

My pensions aren't great but I've had a bloody good time getting to 69 and I wake up every morning ready to take on the world.

My advice... watch your diet and eat basic non-procesed food and squirrel a little bit away, but no more than you can reasonably afford because that "mind that bus, what bus" moment will always be there.

Enjoy life

I tried that but it went mouldy after a few days.

Not quite, I'm on higher tax bracket but contribute 9.9%. They contribute 26%

Who contributes 26%? If that’s the government, no wonder we’re fucked.

Often say this on here but make sure your fund has decent growth and a preferably a mix to mitigate risk.

I ignored my pension for 16 years (contributions about 50k, fund value 60k at that time) and since then it's grown about 16% pa by me changing funds when I see fit. Trustnet is a good start for research or use an advisor.

There is saying that ‘time in the market is more important than timing’

FTSE is up 48.4% in last 5 years, despite Covid, Ukraine, cost of living, terrible Governments etc etc.

Although that level of growth is unlikely to be maintained as long as you were in for that period you have that growth banked. Someone starting today has a long way to catch up.
