Horwich Posted July 26, 2005 Author Posted July 26, 2005 goodwood write up GOODWOOD 2.15 Race Overview A very competitive handicap with plenty of win and place form on offer. A high draw is a positive and top rated Eccentric is the selection. Three Against The Field (In preferred order) 1. Eccentric Very lightly raced on turf and is well handicapped on AW form. Won a valuable Epsom event earlier and was struck into when unplaced in a Lingfield Gr 3 17 days ago. Fair draw and looks set to post a big effort. 2. Ofaraby Won a 71-90 18 days ago at York and loves easy ground. Up 2lbs now but clearly in good heart and has ideal ground conditions. Decent draw and should run well. 3. Promotion Represents in-form yard and has a good high draw. Approx 2.5L 5th in the Old Newton Cup 24 days ago and should appreciate this return to 10f. Unraced on this type of surface which is the main concern. Place prospects. Evaluator, Zero Tolerance, Tiger Tiger and Masafi are also worth consideration. Impeller finished a neck runner up in this race last term off a 3lb lower mark and needs improvement today. 2.50 Race Overview A small field and there is sufficient pace in the line up. Unfurled should appreciate this drop in class. Three Against The Field (In preferred order) 1. Unfurled 7th in the Epsom Derby 52 days ago and holds The Geezer on that form. Won a Listed race here prior to that and yard are in good form. Looks the most likely winner. 2. Brahminy Kite Holds The Geezer on earlier form from York. 8.5L 4th a month ago in the Irish Derby and this will not be as hard. Yard do well here and this one should not be too far away. 3. The Geezer Has a little to do with the 2 above to reverse earlier form. Landed a Haydock Listed event 24 days ago and looks 3rd best today. Cape Greko is up in class. First Row needs to return to earlier form to get involved. 3.25 Race Overview A good Gr 2 with a few chances. Top rated Autumn Glory may just find this test a little sharp and preference is for Ashdown Express. Three Against The Field (In preferred order) 1. Ashdown Express Lightly raced over this 7f trip and does stay. Finished a short head runner up in a Newbury 6f Listed heat 10 days ago (fin strongly) and should appreciate today's extra furlong. Consistent and yard are in good form. Overdue a win. 2. Autumn Glory Smart performer who arrives in excellent form. Won a Lingfield Gr 3 over 1m 17 days ago and holds Court Masterpiece and Vortex on that form. No wins at 7f which is the main concern. Acts on the ground and should post another good run. 3. Court Masterpiece Facile winner of a Listed race here earlier on gd/soft. Has a little to do to reverse recent form with Autumn Glory at today's weights but is consistent and should not be too far away. Suggestive ran well in this race last term and is another to consider, along with Arakan. Montgomerys Arch should appreciate this drop in grade. Vortex is much respected at this level but would prefer faster ground.( 4.00 Race Overview A useful Gr 3 with plenty of improvers in the field. Masta Plasta is taken to defy top-weight. Three Against The Field (In preferred order) 1. Masta Plasta Goes for a hat-trick today. Won a similar race at York 40 days ago and holds Strike Up The Band on that form. Improving and still more to come. The one to beat. 2. Strike Up The Band Useful/improving juvenile. 2L behind the selection 40 days ago and reopposes today on 2lb better terms. Followed that run up with another good Listed effort. Effective under conditions and looks biggest danger to selection. 3. Bow Bridge 4L 3rd 41 days ago in a York Gr 2 and should love today's ground. Good place claims. Waterways is another to consider. Ooh Aah Camara is better than she showed 39 days ago and is tried in headgear. Lady Livius and Figjam both arrive in good form but need to improve. Briland should be noted in the betting 4.35 Race Overview A competitive staying handicap with only 3lbs on Superform ratings between 10 of today's 14 strong field. Rain is forecast for the next couple of days at Goodwood so conditions should remains on the easy side. Three Against The Field (In preferred order) 1. Peak Of Perfection Appeared to not get home on step up to 2m at Lingfield last time out when finishing unplaced. However, stands out on best form at 14f & will not mind today's easy ground. Races today off a mark 2lb higher then when 2nd in a valuable contest at York last year & could get own way upfront. 2. Balkan Knight Not disgraced in the Northumberland Plate but did not see out the 2 mile trip. Today's return to 14f will suit D Elsworth's consistent charge who finished 2nd in this race 12 months ago. Will not mind the ground & the booking of K Fallon is a positive. 3. Sergeant Cecil Improved for step up to 2m to land the valuable Northumberland Plate at Newcastle last month. Has to be respected on that effort, but has shown a preference for fast ground. Vaughan & Camrose both disappointed last time out but are capable on best form of getting involved. Turnstyle comes here in winning form & will be a popular winner wearing the colours of the Queen. Lightly raced Red Damson hails from the shrewd Sir Mark Prescott's stable & is unexposed in handicap grade 5.10 Race Overview Not the strongest maiden on paper ever seen at Goodwood. Prince Of Light should improve for recent debut & looks the one to beat. Three Against The Field (In preferred order) 1. Prince Of Light Showed ability on debut when finishing 3rd in a Doncaster novice stakes just 12 days ago. Should improve for that experience & give the in form Mark Johnston yard another Glorious Goodwood winner. 2. Laith Failed to build on debut with a disappointing 5th on step up to 6f at Newbury last time out. However, would take all the beating on earlier effort & should not be written off yet. 3. Criminal Act Well related newcomer who hails from a stable that is in cracking form at present. Might appreciate further but is one to note in the betting market. Blu Manruna improved for the step up to 7f at Epsom last time out & may not enjoy today's drop in trip. Beckett Hall & Racer Forever are sure to improve on what they have shown so far & can prove best of the rest. PB 5.45 Race Overview Tough finale to solve with little between most of the 22 strong field on Superform ratings. It is normally a big advantage to be drawn high in big field handicap around 7f/1m. Three Against The Field (In preferred order) 1. Plectrum Has run well in all 3 starts this term but has not looked an easy ride. Open to more improvement on handicap bow & should enjoy the likely strong pace back at 1m. Should relish today's easy ground on breeding & is well drawn in stall 13. 2. Grey Boy Comes here in fine form with 2 recent handicap victories to his name. Remains unexposed at a mile & should be capable of better. Expected to run a big race for Mrs A J Perrett but is poorly drawn in stall 2. 3. Selective Could never get competitive in valuable Tote International handicap at Newbury on Saturday. However, will find today's company easier & remains well treated on best form. The booking of D Holland is interesting & a big run is predicted from stall 18. Pango is only 4lb higher than when successful here 12 months ago & will not mind the likely easy ground. Goodwood Spirit, Waterside, Another Faux Pas, Spring Goddess & Ridge Boy are other runners to consider in a tricky getting out stakes Quote
Horwich Posted July 26, 2005 Author Posted July 26, 2005 GOODWOOD (WEDNESDAY) 2.15 Race Overview A trappy staying handicap with a few chances. Quite a few of the field have stamina to prove at this trip which makes finding the winner somewhat harder. Afrad is a tentative selection. Three Against The Field (In preferred order) 1. Afrad Represents strong jumps yard and jockey booking creates interest. Won a 71-90 at Newmarket 20 days ago over 12f and up 6lbs today. Stays 2m over timber and shaped at Newmarket as tho' further should suit. Certainly one for the shortlist. 2. Fortune Island Another hailing from a top jumps yard and earlier ran out a ready winner of a 71-90 at Newmarket and is very closely matched with Race The Ace on that form at today's weights. Good 3rd 15 days ago and this step up in trip should help. Good place claims under top weight. 3. Race The Ace Course winner in '04. 2L runner up behind Fortune Island 3 weeks ago and reopposes today on 5lb better terms. Yard going well and should not be too far away. Circassian and Moonshine Beach look the pick of the remainder. Historic Place is closely matched with Moonshine Beach on earlier form. Ten Carat should have come on for his reapp 3 weeks ago. Frontlinefinancier is up in grade 2.50 Race Overview A useful Gr 2 for juveniles and there is sufficient pace in the field. Top rated Black Charmer gets the vote. Three Against The Field (In preferred order) 1. Black Charmer Represents trainer/jockey who won this race last term and should be able to obtain favoured lead from high stall 9. Won maiden at Doncaster earlier and has improved twice since, finishing half a length runner up in a Curragh Gr 3 10 days ago. Should appreciate this step up to 7f and yard are in good form. 2. Aussie Rules Won debut a month ago at The Curragh (mdn, 6f, good) and should apprecaite this step up to 7f. Plenty to come for powerful raiding Irish yard. 3. Sir Percy Won maiden at this track on earlier debut and followed that up in a Salisbury conditions stakes a month ago. The 4th from that race has since come out and won. Yard could be in better form but 7f will suit and holds good pace claims. Cool Creek was close to the selection last time and should run well. G Butler does well at this meeting and League Champion represents him today. Right Again looks in need of 1m. 3.25 Race Overview A good renewal which sees the first 3 home from last year all line up again. There may be a lack of pace in the race which is a concern. Top rated Soviet Song looks the safest option. Three Against The Field (In preferred order) 1. Soviet Song Won 3 successive Gr 1's in '04, including this race, and represents in-form yard today. Returned to best 22 days ago when landed the Gr 1 Falmouth at Newmarket and is effective under conditions. The one to beat. 2. Proclamation Progressive 3yo who deserves this step up to Gr 1 company today. Won maiden last term on soft ground and was a Listed C/D winner earlier. Outstanding effort 42 days ago to win the Gr 3 Jersey from a poor draw and yard are in good form. More improvement likely and receives age allowance. Big threat to all. 3. Nayyir Loves this track and trainer does well at this meeting. Reported to be in need of reapp a month ago and did well to finish a close 3rd in a Newmarket Gr 3. Ground would become a concern if it became any softer. Finished a neck runner up in this race last term and holds decent place claims. Chic, a Gr 2 C/D winner on good/soft in '04, is expected to have come on since her reapp 18 days ago and holds place claims. Both Sleeping Indian and David Junior are up from Listed grade and merit respect. Le Vie Dei Colori was just over 2L 3rd in this last term but needs improvement today. Kandidate tries headgear 4.00 Race Overview A competitive 3yo handicap with plenty of win and place form on offer and some improving types on show. There was no major draw bias last term tho' ground conditions are different today. Kerashan gets the vote. Three Against The Field (In preferred order) 1. Kerashan Won earlier off an 11lb lower mark. 2.5L runner up in similar at Newmarket 3 weeks ago and holds Foxhaven on that form. Up 2lbs today but steps up to 12f which will suit and should bring about further improvement. Yard in good form and big run expected. 2. One To Win Progressing well and represents in-form yard. Won a 66-85 at Windsor 23 days ago and the 2nd and 3rd from there have both since won. Should stay 12f and holds excellent place claims. 3. Sunday Symphony Head runner up at York 19 days ago and should appreciate return to own age group today and the fitting of headgear. Should run well. Magic Instinct, Art Eyes, Bay Story and Nuwara Eliva are others of interest in an open looking contest 4.35 Race Overview Difficult filles handicap to solve with only 4lbs on Superform ratings between 7 of the 9 strong field. Three Against The Field (In preferred order) 1. Uig Made good use of uncontested lead when landing a similar contest at Lingfield last time out. H Howe's 4yo enjoys easy ground & is progressing well with racing. 2. Love Affair Enjoyed return to a mile with a creditable 2nd from the front at Sandown 7 days ago. Should stay today's extra furlong & give the selection plenty to think about. 3. Strawberry Leaf Lightly raced 3yo who got off the mark at the 3rd time of asking 27 days ago in a Haydock maiden. Open to more improvement on handicap bow for a yard in fine form at present. In a ultra tight contest, Della Salute, Winds Of Time & Ghurra all are capable of getting involved & should not be easily dismissed. 5.10 Race Overview Rosinka stands out clearly on all known form & will be popular to give local trainer John Dunlop another winner here at Goodwood. Three Against The Field (In preferred order) 1. Rosinka Just found one too good in a competitive Newbury maiden on debut 27 days ago. The form of that race has not worked out well but John Dunlop's charge should improve for that effort & go one better. 2. Aurora Jane Interesting newcomer who is related to a number of winners over further. Hails from a stable in fine form & the booking of K Fallon is a good sign. 3. Magadar Left modest debut effort behind with a good 2nd on the polytrack at Lingfield recently. Should not be faraway if translating that form to turf. Culture Queen merits respect on breeding & is one to note in the betting market. 5.45 Race Overview D Nicholls has a fine record at Glorious Goodwood in sprint handicaps & runs no less than 5 of today's 16 strong field. With conditions likely to be on the easy side of good it normally pays to be drawn low. Three Against The Field (In preferred order) 1. Wanchai Lad Ran a fine race from out of the handicap to finish 3rd in a valuable contest at Newbury on easy ground 3 days ago. Should find today's contest slightly easlier & will have the race run to suit from stall 6. 2. Whistler Could never get competitive in a valuable sprint handicap at Newbury recently. However, seems to enjoy Goodwood & likes easy ground. Only 2lb higher than win here earlier this term & can run a big race. 3. Sir Edwin Landseer Appreciated fitting of 1st time tongue strap to land a similar contest at Windsor earlier this month. Has enough pace to deal with the return to 5f & remains v well handicapped on best form. Plateau & Native Title come here in good form & are other D Nicholl runners to be respected. The Jobber defied a poor low draw to win at Sandown 26 days ago & is capable of getting involved. Cerulean Rose & Cape Royal can prove best of the rest. Quote
