Throwing games

There may be a few upset managers/directors/fans after this weekends results.

Towards the back end of last week both West Brom and Birmingham asked the FA to look at the team West Ham where to put out against Portsmouth after Pardew had indicated that his 'new' priority was to win the FA Cup.

West Ham played Portsmouth, with Pompey being in the relegation dog-fight with both West Brom and Birmingham. Low and behold, Pardew 'rested' key players about 8 in all. They lost convincingly at home to Portsmouth 2-4 managed by former West Ham manager Redknapp.

This obviously has giving Portsmouth a fighting chance of beating the drop.

Manchester City also in the FA Cup and going into the weekend fixture had a change of qualifying for Europe in the league, they to put out an under strength side to play Wigan.

Wigan won 0-1 and they to now have a realistic change of qualifying for Europe, but in the league. This has strengthened their chances of finishing higher in the league with a 'gift' of 3 points, just like Portsmouth.

The argument is, is this right that teams blatantly play their fringe players so they can try to seek an 'edge' in another competition?

Portsmouth may stay up and what if Wigan sneak into a UEFA spot on the back of these 3 gifted points?

Discuss.

when we did it, i had no problems with it

i feel the same now

all wrong

does Pardew REALLY think he can win the F.A.Cup ????

stick to winning games in the league that you know you should win with a full team out.

Now much of an arguement there.

Don't forget the time of season is curcial. Both West Ham and Man City knew before they played their FA cup replays that the next cup would be on Monday night. Portsmouth and Wigan have now benifited from this, they may have well given them the points before kicking-off.

What about the West Ham and Man City fans who paid good money to watch their 2nd string get beat just so they can play another game, albeit in the cup?

there is no arguement, just my opinion

as for how will the fans feel, ask em on monday

those that win will say it was a masterstroke, the losers will moan

as per

pardew and pearce have done what they felt was best

the fault lies with the fa..simple as that

Its a hard one this, cos we ducked out of the League and FA Cups at Tottenham in embarrassing style and got slaughtered for it. I think some pundits and journalists called for us to be kicked out of the competitions for showing a lack of respect. But now 2 teams have shown a lack of respect for the Premiership in favour of the FA Cup.

I cannot blame either team, the powers that be - ie. the TV, have dictated this along with SGE.

But had WHU put out a full team against Portsmouth, there is no saying that the players present would have given it their all anyway.

Teams and Managers have a right to choose who they wish to play and no way should that ever change. Looking at it from another angle, whoever loses between Manchester City and West Ham, recent selections for Premiership games could mean they have sacrificed a European place for nothing. Struggling teams complaining that the team selection of others is causing their lowly league position should buy themselves a mirror.

Wigan won 0-1 and they to now have a realistic change of qualifying for Europe

Its Pearce and Pardews own choice which team they pick. But either think that their best chance of europe is the cup then they better think again.

Will we be whinging if Steve McClaren puts out a weakened team at their place aiming for the Eufa cup??

We didnt when WHU did last week.

Personally I think the FA should throw the book at WHu, 35 point deduction :D

Can't see the problem we have been the worlds worse at pulling this trick.

And we did it at West Ham on wednesday, why play Hunt when O'brien is fit?

We will be on the right side of it next sunday.

QF of FA Cup and UEFA or us in a league game.

Football is a business.

I don't have a problem cos it's totally down to the luck of the draw. Simple as that.

I've seen AC Milan tie up Serie A one year by drawing at home to a side that also needed a point to stay up. Now believe me, that WAS a fix. AC Milan scored a long ranger by accident, the other side went up the other end, lo and behold, and equalised immediately. Back they went to passing the ball about between each other...finished 1-1.

i dont think birmingham and wba can complain, same back 4, teddy and zamora upfront, others were forced injuries. Hardly weakened. However! Pardew needs a right slap, loss on monday should sort him out.

Agree 100% and if 606 had been on tonight I would have rung in to say so.

Garth Crooks etc. are total arses for suggesting otherwise.

Mind, Crooks is a total arse anyway.

Well hopefully the City/Wham winner gets Chelsea and gets stuffed and then its a Chelsea Liverpool final so 7th place gets UEFA but they both miss out. We get CL and then Wigan get the final UEFA spot - not that I want the bastards to, its just that I'd love to see what state Uncle Northy gets himself into if it happens :D :D :D 8-[

Took 33 minutes, not bad :D/

West Brom should remember that they played a weakened team at Chelsea in a midweek game earlier in the season, to save players for the weekend.

Still, 35 point deduction for WHU would be nice :D

It was the case once where teams who fielded weakened teams were fined by the football league. Medical certificates were required for players who were claimed to be injured. Nowadays anything goes.

And for those claiming Man City and West Ham won't win the FA Cup they are wrong. They only have to win three games, two after tomorrow night. And again the winners tomorrow will be in the semi final and if they draw the winners of Charlton and Middlesbrough then the winners of that semi will be guaranteed a UEFA cup place assuming Chelsea and Liverpool both win this week.

You do whats best for your own team and fcuk the rest thats there problem if they dont get enough points to stay up its called priorities or something.

When I played I once did a deliberate hand ball in the box so that my mates team we were playing against would get a penalty then beat us to stay in the top division. We had nothing to play for so I couldn't give a f??ck, got some beers bought me :D also alot of abuse from the mob that went down[/u]

in those days biff, fixtures were set be the league not television.

by agreeing to such a schedule the league have cuased the problem NOT west ham.

we know insist that all managers pass coaching badges, first thing you learn is to allow enough time after playing top level sport to recover before you play again. then people with no qualifications make rules that mean this basic fact is ignored. i know in the past players played a lot of games but that is why half them can hardly walk.

as for pardew he did the right thing for his club even if not for the good of the english game, it does make him look stupid for moaning about arsenal, there is no way any action should be taken against him though.

Pardew was/is a prick for putting a cup run infront of the league when they have a semi-relistic chance of nicking a UEFA spot through the league. Ultimately they have a 95% chance of getting hoofed out by a better team - Villlan/hero or out and out prat?

Where have all the Hammers gone :-k :D :-$
