Article in The Times today states that Allardyce is the realistic challenger to McClaren for the England job

All the indications in recent days have been of a two-way fight between McClaren and Sam Allardyce, despite O???Neill???s considerable reputation. The Bolton Wanderers manager???s support was thought to have ebbed, but a good interview last week, in which he showed off his extensive dietary and psychological preparation at the Reebok Stadium, is known to have convinced at least one member of the board.

Not a huge fan of Sven but his record stands up, and that is a fact.

 

Qualified every time with decent ease, lost to Brazil (the winners) in the 1/4 final in one tournament and Portugal (the hosts and beaten finalists) on pens in another.

 

If he'd won either of those games he'd have matched the achievements of Venables and Robson who are both revered despite having easy runs / home advantage when they had tournament success.

i am not a massive england fan, take it or leave it really. but i cant understand the the issue with erikson, done a very decent job in my eyes.

 

seems more like the papers will try and bring down anyone who is in such a high profile job, no matter how good/bad he is...

as i argued the other day, the 'class' of the squad is far from proven

its made an impossible job for whoever takes it, Erikson

was the best thing since sliced bread when he took over

and now he gets hammered for everything he does. some may argue he brings it on himself, but me thinks this is a impossible job to keep everyone including the media off there backs.

Everybody says that Sven lacks passion, but prior to him, in Keegan, we had a manager with loads of passion and look what happened to him, he just couldn't handle it and walked.

If it's between these two muppets for the job I think I'll stop watching England. Neither are good enough and whilst you can say the squad are so good any old donkey could manage them - I can't imagine the players being motivated by either of them.

You sell more papers if you are attacking someone than praising them.

We need the best for the job, not just make do because they are English!

Foreign isn't always best.

 

Italian clubs appoint Italian managers and they do alright.

 

The big clubs don't always go foreign because that's best; it's because it's fashionable.

 

Curbishley and Sam would in the past have had bigger jobs and the chance to 'prove themselves' by now after what they've achieved.

i dont buy this supposed quality in the england squad, we have rooney and gerrard and joe cole who can produce top class performance on there day but none are consintent enough for me, it would not suprise me if we struggled to come through the group, brazil will piss it ronaldhinio will win it on his own.

i dont see how Sam's dietry/psych stuff can translate to international football. He'd see the squad once every 3 months or so for 2/3 days... anything he puts in place would be gone the week after when the club managers want things their way. Can you see Wayne Rooney doing tai chi and eating pasta-salad???

 

Personally I think Sam thrives on the day-to-day involvement with the players and his staff, I think this is why his man management is regarded so highly and why players feel they owe him something. I just can't see this working at international level.

 

Anyway, I don't think you need a 'manager' per se to run a national team, you need a 'head coach'.
