SAM ALLARDYCE is in advance talks with two unnamed strikers in his attempt to strengthen squad.

As the players recovered after Tuesday night's defeat against Recreativo Huelva at their training base in Spain, the Bolton boss was busy taking calls beavering away trying to complete deals with prospective signings.

Allardyce has made no secret that his priority is to bring in a proven striker who is capable of scoring 15 goals a season. With the season fast approaching, suddenly there could be light at the end of the tunnel in his quest for new faces at the Reebok Stadium.

"We have made a number of offers for a number of players," said Allardyce.

"I have resisted spending money on some players I could have bought to play in midfield because that would have taken away from the money that would have been available. When we missed Andy Johnson I wanted to keep the vast majority of that available for the ultimate goalscorer, if I could find it.

"I am speaking to two front men that are very interesting, as far as I am concerned. Talks are at an advance stage and negotiations are progressing nicely without feeling too confident."

Allardyce used the example of Arsenal, who had world-class striker Thierry Henry to thank for last season's efforts in the Champions League. The French international scored the majority of Arsenal's goals from a forward position in their efforts in reaching the Champions League Final.

He added:

"A goalscorer is 60 or 70 per cent of our problem. It's interesting to study the statistics from Arsenal last season. Henry scored 22 goals and the nearest to him was six. They finished fourth and got to the Champions League final and had a good back end to the season after an injury crisis which they overcame because when Henry played he kept on scoring, When Arsenal were not in the game or looked out of sorts and looked like they weren't going to do anything, they came back and got something because of Henry. He got them wins instead of draws and draws instead of losses.

"That's why it's important to hold this money back and wait for the big signing to try and improve the rest of the squad after that.

"It's okay saying I could have brought in new players: I could have brought in Jarosik from Chelsea before he went to Celtic and other players like that who would have cost ??2-3 million. But then, when it came to hey lads hey and I had to go to the chairman and it had to be 7,8,9 or 10 million and it wasn't there, I'd be kicking myself and we as a football club would be in the same position we've been in for the last three or four years - comfortable creating chances but without someone who can see them off."

It is now time for either money to be spent or for my favourite players like Diouf, Stelios and Nolan to come to the fore.

It's a new season and the slate has been wiped clean.

I sincerely hope the club can get the best out of Diouf: it's looking like we're going to need it.

What have you done with the real Traf, where is he?

anelka played 75 mins in the champions league last night

i for one dont want the Incredible Sulk

That makes 2 of you then!

Anybody else want to pass on a certain 20+ goals a season and hence a guaranteed way to turn convincing draws into actual wins and a higher league position . . . cos you don't like his personality ???

You don't have to socialise with the guy you know . . . just clap n perhaps cheer when he puts it in the 'onion bag' :D

Then, it's a good job we didn't make Europe this season: he'd be cup-tied.

The only positive thing i have to say about Anelka other than his eye for goal is that when he does throw his toys out of the pram the selling club usually get a decent fee for him...

Traf =D>

thats exactly as it is...

that statement from the club/sam is simply to ease worrying which has had the opposite effect on me.

It can be sorted.. we have funds and we have some good players..

it is in the balance though.. I don't think the worrying is unfounded.

I took a 3-day mini-break from here to rid myself of the overriding pessimism and drivel that was clogging the place up. I was on Love Island, really. :D

And it means that he won't be transferred to a team playing in Europe this season, which was his first preference. His second was to play in England.

I think there's a very good chance of him signing for us or Pompey.

Ballesta and Pierre Yves Andre. Fact :^o

Its about time we stopped being negative about a move for the likes of Anelka. The one thing you are guarenteed with him is goals out of nothing and a realistic 20 a season man. We have to be positive and see any aquisition like this as a coup for Little old bolton. Sam can change anyone round to their best just imagine a fraction of Anelka at Arsenal. Contrary to idle speculation Sam knows best

A bit negative Mount??? You've been on top moaning form

i know i have, i said that in my post if you read it. ](*,)

Didn't Pompey pull out last week. Leaving.........US! :D

I was making reference to the "bit" quote. You've been moaning like notright, not just a bit.

Don't believe all that you read - we've supposedly pulled out of signing players before, only for them to sign on later...

I for one, would be happy if we sign him.

Bolton pull out more than a Catholic does.

Don't shoot the messenger

BUT

Andy Cole plus ??3 million is the current exchange for Jussi, as Calamity seems certain to leave

You deserve shooting for that rubbish

Sam has been holding back on ??2-3 million signings (his words) in case Andy Cole became available?

Utter tosh

I don't think he said Sam was holding back so he could get Cole. I think he was merely passing on a rumour that City would be prepared to offer ??3m plus Cole for Jussi.

PS The rumour came from the man in the pub, so it could be true! :D

Bloomin' eck, calm down.

It's only gossip from nowheresville but with some of the stories we have read, I thought it worth passing on.
