SAM ALLARDYCE is in advance talks with two unnamed strikers in his attempt to strengthen squad.
As the players recovered after Tuesday night's defeat against Recreativo Huelva at their training base in Spain, the Bolton boss was busy taking calls beavering away trying to complete deals with prospective signings.
Allardyce has made no secret that his priority is to bring in a proven striker who is capable of scoring 15 goals a season. With the season fast approaching, suddenly there could be light at the end of the tunnel in his quest for new faces at the Reebok Stadium.
"We have made a number of offers for a number of players," said Allardyce.
"I have resisted spending money on some players I could have bought to play in midfield because that would have taken away from the money that would have been available. When we missed Andy Johnson I wanted to keep the vast majority of that available for the ultimate goalscorer, if I could find it.
"I am speaking to two front men that are very interesting, as far as I am concerned. Talks are at an advance stage and negotiations are progressing nicely without feeling too confident."
Allardyce used the example of Arsenal, who had world-class striker Thierry Henry to thank for last season's efforts in the Champions League. The French international scored the majority of Arsenal's goals from a forward position in their efforts in reaching the Champions League Final.
He added:
"A goalscorer is 60 or 70 per cent of our problem. It's interesting to study the statistics from Arsenal last season. Henry scored 22 goals and the nearest to him was six. They finished fourth and got to the Champions League final and had a good back end to the season after an injury crisis which they overcame because when Henry played he kept on scoring, When Arsenal were not in the game or looked out of sorts and looked like they weren't going to do anything, they came back and got something because of Henry. He got them wins instead of draws and draws instead of losses.
"That's why it's important to hold this money back and wait for the big signing to try and improve the rest of the squad after that.
"It's okay saying I could have brought in new players: I could have brought in Jarosik from Chelsea before he went to Celtic and other players like that who would have cost ??2-3 million. But then, when it came to hey lads hey and I had to go to the chairman and it had to be 7,8,9 or 10 million and it wasn't there, I'd be kicking myself and we as a football club would be in the same position we've been in for the last three or four years - comfortable creating chances but without someone who can see them off."
