tomy taylor Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 my sisters boyfriend lost one of his fingers while working yesterday, and another might have to be cut off, so won't be able to work for a while. being self employed will he able to claim any benefits or anything? thanks in advance
HomerJay Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 how did he lose it... where theres blame theres a claim...
Spider Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Was he sub-contracting? If not (ie. just doing a job for Joe Public) he's in a bit of a pickle. His only route out is if he's got very good insurance. And like Homer says - he may have a claim. But that won't put food on the table now....
jayjayoghani Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Blaming and claiming will take a while. In the meantime, he should be eligible for Incapacity Benefit I think. http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/JCP/Custom...008025.xml.html However I would recommend speaking to someone at the Job Centre before taking the time to claim anything.
Bea Smith Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 providing he has paid his national insurance minimum ( ??27 a quarter) he will be eligible but only after a probationary period, last time i looked into it, 6 weeks. however- he can apply for a social fund loan/crisis loan from social security as they are awarded to anyone provided they have the means to pay it back eventually. also if he has a mortgage get him to inform them asap, he may have cover against accident, and may be able to defer mortgage payments for a while or pay interest only. if they have kids get him to check benefit entitlement. hopefully the system hes paid into wil give him something back now. get him to ring inland revenue- there may be some way of getting some tax back, as you pay it in advance when youre self employed, and if hes not working for a while he will have obviously overpaid.
Smiffs Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 hopefully the system hes paid into wil give him something back now. You're havin a laugh!!

Guest The Special One Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Some lad was working with me years ago and we were lining up a hydraulic ram to pin it and he decided to put his finger inside to see if it was flush, the ram slipped and took the end of his finger off, it looked like he was having a piss the way he held hos hand as the blood was squirting out, then I had to dig the finger out and freeze it but it couldn't be saved. Anyway I think he got 5 grand for it.

tomy taylor Posted August 23, 2006 Author Posted August 23, 2006 to answer questions: he's an antiques dealer mortgage paid with my sister, who's about to give birth anytime now cheers for all the advice so far, passed some of it onto my sister, who no longer thinks they'll have to live in a cardbopard box, for a few weeks at least
Bigtoe Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Some good TIPS here, in fact some excellent POINTS, hitting the NAIL on the head. Its saved THUMBING through pages of advice leaflets. Ask him DIGIT hurt and if so Can he FINGER the blame on anyone?
MickyD Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Just as a matter of interest, how the f??ck does an antiques dealer do something even remotely likely to lose himself a finger?
1958 Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Just as a matter of interest, how the f??ck does an antiques dealer do something even remotely likely to lose himself a finger? Dunno, cant quite put a finger on it
Bea Smith Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 never ever stick your finger up bum holes. those tight little ring pieces can do some damage.
tomy taylor Posted August 24, 2006 Author Posted August 24, 2006 Just as a matter of interest, how the f??ck does an antiques dealer do something even remotely likely to lose himself a finger? also restores furniture, cutting a piece of wood on a circular saw.
