Biggest slice of luck was McAteer not getting sent off for the penalty, as he had already been booked. A lot of refs would have shown a 2nd yellow.

 

I enjoy Coyle's goal the most - great power from the header as he was falling slightly backwards.

 

I remember being in a pub in Hammersmith after the game and some Reading fans came up to us, wished us well and said "Make sure you stay up lads."

Weird thing was - even at 2-0 down with 15 minutes left - we all just knew a comeback was on it's way. And back then - we played some f?cking fantastic football. But all that pretty passing got us nowhere in the top flight, only when BS played 'negative' tactics where we good enough to stay up..............

 

Our fans back then were a different breed, compare Reading in 95 to the Boro cup final at Cardiff & it seemed like the Bolton/Farnworth fans had been replaced by a load of Horwich/Chorley/other sheep-sh?ggers.

It wasn't only Barry Knight who shafted us; Ipswich chairman successfully forced through an ammendment that away goals would not count double in play off semis after they had lost out to that rule the previous couple of seasons.

 

Still hate Ipswich, even though Freddi Bobic stuffing them single handed was one of the great days at the Reebok.

Northern Lights was new around 1995, I can remember thinking "is this really happening?" during the first half

On the topic of teams we have hated over the years . Tranmere seem to be near the top of my list and looking at the link below we may be on theirs . Wow how things have changed since that defeat at Wembley. Youve got to love them . The match in question must have seem like such an achievement to them at the Reebok.

Good call. I have always felt this. We were cheated not only by Barry Knight but Sheepshanks as well. He used his position as Chairman of The Football League to influence the rule change from the conventional and generally accepted away goals rule because of sour grapes. we had beaten Ipswich the previous season 1-0 at The Reebok and lost 3-4 at Portman Road but went through on away goals. He then saw to it that the away goals rules were abolished for the Plays off the following seson. It was all the more ironic that it was us that played them the next year. Whilst I am sure that some out there will be able to tell me to the contrary I do not know of any tournaments where ties are two legged home and away affairs where away goals do not count as double in the event of a draw. Also if I didn't know any better I would remain TOTALLY CONVINCED to this day that Knight's bank balance was a lot healthier the day after the match.

 

I also hate Ipswich for the reasons above. I went back to Portman Road for the FA Cup 3rd round game in 2004 (or was it 2005?) although I thoroughly enjoyed our victory it fell a long way short of making up for that night.
