But to get some perspective their will be many more England international players who have died in the intervening years who will get no such honour on the 10,20,25,30,40 & 50th anniversary of their passing away.

 

And the thing that sticks in the throat is that this minutes silence is only happening because of the team they played for and not who they were as individuals, or as sons, brothers, fathers, husbands who left loved ones behind.

 

Which says more about the perverse society we live in than the poor people who dies or were personally affected by the tragedy.

We should be respectfully remembering those individuals who died or were injured, and remembering all their families whose lives were changed forever. Whether or not that should include a minute's silence at tonight's England match is a matter of opinion.

 

On the other hand, while the media are stuffing us with 'facts' about the 'unbeatable' and 'best team in the world' at that time, we can also remember the Wanderers' matches against them at that time. Between 1953/54 and 1957/58 (pre-Munich Busby Babes) :-

It would be very cynical of me to suggest that the disaster has been a great marketing ploy for the OT empire builders over the years.

But not a fraction as cynical as the OT club have been.

The anniversary of the Burnden disaster will be on March 9th. We are due to play Man United at Old Trafford on March 8th (unless moved to March 9th by Sky, or postponed by FA cup tie).

already posted that they are no plans to sell commemerative shirts, i personally feel now the fa have set precedent they will have to keep this up for ALL anniversaries of former internationals deaths should they coincide with a game... but since when have the fa kept face?

 

personally feel a minutes silence is insignificant, it would make no difference if it was Notts County players who died. doesnt mean others dont have the right to pay their respects

 

*that is to say i would still feel the event was tragic, and think that there should be some sort of benevolent fund from the PFA, not so much the FA... if the captain was Rodriguez Byrnacchi was the captain would he be omitted from the memorial?
