WARNING - ANORAK EXPLANATION BELOW -

 

On the 20th April, 1968 Conservative MP for Wolverhampton South West, Enoch Powell made a speech in Birmingham in which he more or less said (in my words) that immigration was growing, that it would continue to increase (not only from further immigrants arriving in the country but by the immigrants already here having children) and that he foresaw a time in the not too distant future that there would be trouble between the native British (whites) and the immigrants (West Indian and Asian - blacks).

 

He actually said the following -

 

"As I look ahead, I am filled with foreboding. Like the Roman, I seem to see 'the River Tiber foaming with much blood'. That tragic and intractable phenomenon which we watch with horror on the other side of the Atlantic but which there is interwoven with the history and existence of the States itself, is coming upon us here by our own volition and our own neglect. Indeed, it has all but come."

 

What he was referring to with America was the 'Race Riots' that were taking place at the time in the USA.

 

His reference to the 'the River Tiber foaming with much blood' - which the press used to name his speech - The River's of Blood' - was in respect of Virgil's line from the Aeneid 6, 1.86, in which the Sibyl prophesies "wars, terrible wars, and the Tiber foaming with much blood"

 

Following from his speech Powell was sacked from his post in the Conservative Shadow Cabinet.

 

Rather interestingly (at least to me) is that the "Rivers of Blood" speech would have come as a complete surprise to anyone who had studied his record: he had been a West Midlands MP for 24 years but had said hardly anything about immigration. On this view, the speech was merely part of a badly miscalculated strategy to become the next party leader when Ted Heath (the then leader) left the position.

 

For the record when Heath did 'lose' his job, some quite young girl by the name of Margaret Thatcher took over!
