buckhurstwhite Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Spot on. Fans of bigger clubs spend their lives harping on about throwing medals on the table in an argument - it would be simply jaw-dropping if BWFC could pull off a UEFA cup triumph. I'd take a 2/3 year purgatory in the championship for it no hesitation. I hear what you say but I'm glad your not in charge of the finances! Staying up is a must otherwise we willl disappear into obscurity for a very long time
bolty58 Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Well,it wasn't the same as the Uefa Cup.Teams were invited to enter the Fairs Cup rather than qualify on league positionsNewcastle finished 10th in 67/68 and were invited to enter.Arsenal who finished 9th weren't. Let's just leave it at 'we have differing opinions'. Like it or not, it was a big thing for NUFC at the time and, IMO, rightly so.
Spider Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 I hear what you say but I'm glad your not in charge of the finances! Staying up is a must otherwise we willl disappear into obscurity for a very long time Nope. We're still obscure despite 3 top 8 finishes in 3 years. We will always be a minority club and considered unfashionable. We like it that way. Obscurity holds no fear for most on this forum who I expect would be glad of a major trophy. In division 4 (can't beleive I'm even being this clich?d) even dreaming of being in Europe meant you'd probably wet the bed. No, I'd swap the money laden Prem for the UEFA cup any day. I understand what you're saying but that sounds like the modern day brainwashed SkySports fan speaking as opposed to someone who has never seen us win somrthing beyond our wildest dreams.

And we also have a good following in Nigeria these days so maybe we are not so obscure these days!
revdishydave Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 the PL is not the be all and end all, i would love to see us win a trophy rather than be content with safety... mediocrity is awful. i feel as a club we have some sort of cult status, everyone has an opinion of us, winning the uefa cup would enhance this, as opposed to just becoming another team who finishes 12th-16th every year
Zico Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 the PL is not the be all and end all, i would love to see us win a trophy rather than be content with safety... mediocrity is awful. it may not be the be all and end all, but div one/championship is v v mediocre
revdishydave Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 it may not be the be all and end all, but div one/championship is v v mediocre the league/standard of football maybe, but not necessarily the clubs if you asked forest fans if they would give up the two european cups to be in the PL now, how many would? no-one has a divine right to be in the top flight, only 'big' clubs have any sort of longevity, and even then they have to wait for success/euro qualification, spurs, everton, villa have had a shit few years- it must have been so frustrating to have such high expectations and just plod along. charlton, leicester, saints, coventry, all had a good stint in the PL, and got nowhere near as close to euro glory (with the possible exception of leicester as i am sure someone will point out), i am sure again fans would have sacrificed one year in the prem for a trophy...
