+ Michalik

+ the club reportedly had money to spend in any event (the club reported it, from memory)

+ Megson confirmed that the club enquired about Defoe, who went to Portsmouth @ ?9m

My guesstimate (it can only ever be that) is that the club had ?10m to spend and couldn't/didn't/wouldn't

It is only speculation, but this is why the fans feel it is Gartsid at fault; "guilty, as charged, your honour"

this thread has a very good chance of becoming a load of old bollocks. I see that Homer has already predicted this..................

who didn't play today, because he is on loan from Spurs

My guess only as well, but Steinsson @ ?3.5M, Taylor @ 3.5M and Cahill @ ?5M probably takes care of your ?10M threory

i'm on your side, so before you get corrected, he actually signed for pompey permanently, but outside the window, so was inelgible

+ the ?9m we would have had to match to get Defoe and you can see how I get my figure

You don't want unused cash reducing interest, you need it on the pitch.

And what about the Anelka profit that the club claim not to have spent yet?

we could need that to pay next years wages.

to me that is good management by the board.

righto phil.

ok, fcuk it, spend all our money and more on overpriced players (because good players dont come to struggling clubs)

then chances are we will still be in the same position now and next season we will still be shite, paying sky high wages struggling to get promotion, then the following season go into administration and end up like leeds.

oh joy!

fact is, whats happened has happened, we are were we are, we have megson, we have the players we have, we cant change it.

so how about we fukcin actually get behind the team and hope they can get out of this mess!

THEN at the end season, if need be, sack the board, sack megson, sell the fookin lot of them and start afresh.

What is "GILF"?

Anyone who thinks Defoe would sign for a struggling northern team seriously needs their bumps felt!

As far as we know we were definately in for 3 player in january.

Defoe - didn't want to move up north

Elmander - were quoted silly money to sign him

Gudjohnsen - He wanted to stick at Barca, who can blame him

We didn't sign a striker we should have done, we've been over this ground many a time.

But those who think Megson and Gartside made a concious descision not to bother signing a striker is as dumb as a post!

Well if we cannot profit out of 5 seasons like those, then we might as well go down and have done with it. I mean if the oft-touted "budget for 17th" is true then we've made ?15 in "extra" positional prize money in the last 3 years alone, for example.

The point is we will go down ere too long. Its the way of things; teams will come up who do better than expected or get a sugar daddy (and the in case of QPR the new owners make Abramovich look a pauper).

If, on the way back from Cardiff after winning promotion, you'd asked me what I'd hope for after 7 consecutive years in the top flight then - after picking myself off the floor having fainted in amazement that we'd done 7 (and that's before I'd been told about having 9 UEFA away trips) - I'd have suggested we'd have either

a Built a set-up capable of surviving the loss of manager or players, at least in the short term while we regroup

or

b Secured the future by getting rid of debt and building a firm base in the form of an academy churning good players out, so that even if we do go down we're still healthy.

As I say, I'd have fallen over in shock to hear we managed 7 seasons in the PL in a row.

I'd have collapsed again the hear about the UEFA adventures.

But those reactions would pale into insignificance compared to apoplexy that would great the news that after 7 years in the PL our debt is as great as ever, we throw UEFA Cup games and have a cobbled together squad and a second debatable manager in the space of a season.

Have the last 7 years really bequeathed us naught but memories???

Leave the finances to the incompetent accountants, we've had a good time - haven't we?

Leave the finances to the incompetent accountants, we've had a good time - haven't we?

indeed - I'm quite happy to do that (an we have had a belting time), but then also quite happy to play most of the Championship teams rather than the overblown PL. But the accountants tell me otherwise and shout dire warnings as to how it will be the end of us....

I think we did build such a set-up but unfortunately Allardyce dismantled a lot of it when he left and Sammy Lee proved to be the wrong man for the job.
