Very saddened to hear the news of John's passing, he was a great servant for us and played over 200 games, a no nonsence center half, made his debut at 17, and managed to keep Bryan Edwards out of the team, he saw off John Napier and Charlie Hurley's claim for the number 5 shirt, it wasn't until Paul Jones came along, that he droped out of the team, Stuart Lee told me he was living in San Diego for a while, pissed off at myself now for not going to see him

John was an absolutely great guy and one of the bravest footballers that you could hope to see when we had a few toughies. He came into the team in the Div 1 relegation season ?1964 and played some stormers in a really young team. He once played with a closed black eye against Arsenal at Highbury if I remember right.

 

His mother lived directly across the road from me later and I met him unloading a builder's truck one day and he had a few good anecdotes about the 1964 season.

 

He reckoned that if they could have only stayed up that season with Lee, Davies, Hill, Taylor in the forward line, they might have well established themselves. Sadly, it was not to be and he spent a lot of time holding the bridge single handedly at Burnden in the late 60s.

Wasn't old enough to know him or see the great man play,however once they've worn the Famous White Jersey of BWFC they'll never be forgotten!R.I.P Fellow White!

He was one of the better players in a declining team in my early days as a fan, until Jimmy Armfield came along to rescue us. But I agree with all the earlier comnents, John Hulme was a top guy for the wanderers!

Seem to recall him scoring once or twice at an away game (cup?) at Nottm Forest in a 4-2 defeat (I think Forest had a top striker called Quinn at the time who scored two or three). Big John didn't defend too well that day but he was tickled pink at scoring (I don't think his scoring record would be too flash - certainly not double figures?)

Isn't it funny, not a sniff from The Bolton Evening News about the sad loss of one of our own, yet they can make a big splash about two rich SCUM slimeballs who shed out big money to meet that Portugesse cheating, diving red tee-wat

It was his first goal in league or cup for the first team.A 2-4 defeat in the FA Cup in 67/68.He also played in the famous League Cup win against Liverpool that season.He made his first team debut in 62/63 at home to Forest and that was his only appearance that season.

 

9 goals in 215 appearances for the first team.He never scored more than one in a match and funnily enough he scored both at home and away against Aston Villa in 68/69.

I don't know if it counts as a first team appearance but he is also in the line up in one of my favourite all time Bolton away programmes....Morecambe in the Lancashire Cup in 66/67.

Other things I remember from the Forest away game was copping a slap in a cafe from lads wearing pit helmets and the Trent End incessantly singing that Manfred Mann hit 'The Mighty Quinn'.

I was at Anfield for the 1-1 draw Sept 13th 1967 Franny Lee scored for us and silenced The Kop, Mr Shankly said we were the better team, then we beat them in the replay 3-2 on Sept 27th, Freddy Hill scored one and Tiger Taylor got two, King Johney thumped Tommy Smith in the tunnel after the game, then sneaked out the back way as Smith was waiting for him, Burnden was Electric that night.....

We had to wait until Oct 5th 1971 to have another night even better thats when Gary scored the hat-trick, it was brilliant going to school the day after, at that time City had all internationals, but did anyone on here go to the previous round when we beat Huddersfield 0-2 away with Roy Greaves scoring both goals, I don't think the motorway was built then, I remember driving away from the ground and at every traffic light our coach got bricked....ah happy days !!!

Nothing much I can add to 'Ender's' post except to say that the game was a League Cup 2nd Round Replay, played on a Wednesday in front of a crowd of 30,669 - the crowd at Anfield being 45,957.

 

We lost 4-1 away at West Ham in the next round - John Byrom getting our goal.

 

John Hulme was in the team when I first started watching Bolton - RIP big man.

That was the night that there was thousands of us at Stamford Bridge, most of us in The Shed keeping quiet....until we scored, your right Graham Rowe could have won it for us, he was clean through got tackled, if he had stayed down it would have been a penalty....but no he got up and then bottled it, that was the night when someone painted The Shed Gates with "Bolton Took The Shed" which was seen on an episode of The Sweeny, most of us went on the footy special from Trinity Street, you could not move on the train....got to Euston and chased Chelsea all over the place, I think a few years later when Chelsea were all over Burnden was a bit of payback for that night
