Eddie Davies

Chairman Phil Gartside has questioned whether Bolton would even be in existence without major shareholder Eddie Davies, following the club record signing of Johan Elmander.

Wanderers boss Gary Megson took his spending to around the ?15million mark on Friday with the capture of the Sweden striker which followed the arrival of ?5million midfielder Fabrice Muamba.

Isle of Man-based businessman Davies has bankrolled the club throughout their Premier League era and Gartside said: "If it wasn't for Eddie, we could even not be in existence, that is how crucial it was when he joined the club 10 years ago."

He added: "He has put more personal investment into Bolton than any other person in the history of the club, relative to the period he has supported us.

"Basically, he is a fan and the reason for him being involved is that he wants to have fun, he wants Bolton to survive and he doesn't want to lose his money - as long as we keep going with those three promises we expect him to keep supporting us for some time to come."

"Johan's arrival represents a record fee for the club and is Gary's sixth signing since January.

"We have had scouts at all the tournaments in the summer and we have had discussions with players and football clubs to rejig the squad and bring in players that Gary wants.

"We have a hit-list of players and positions but it is not a one-year task - it has to be done over a period.

"We don't have a huge chequebook but what we are doing is bringing in better quality than we have lost to improve the squad."

Essex?

It is amazing that Eddie Davies is still involved with the club and pumping more money in, the strong rumours in Macedonia was that the club was up for sale and Davies was throwing in the towel, rumours continued to persist over the last 3 months of the season and were not denied by the club, I wonder what has prompted such a dramatic turnaround from Davies?

Maybe the rumours were bullshit in the first place. They usually are.

I agree, It is amazing that Eddie Davies is still involved with the club especially as Bolton fans are so w@nk. Everday we hear 'so called' Bolton fans moaning about the Chairman, slagging off the manager, criticising players that give 100%, what more do people want? I used to say Wanderersways should change its name to NegativeWays, but there are a few good supporters that do get behind the team, instead of looking for the smallest reason to look on the black side.

We are so lucky to have at our club what many other clubs can only dream about. If I had Eddie Davies's money I wouldn't put a penny of it invested in BWFC because it doesn't get appreciated.

I still can't believe that little giant-killing Bolton are actually a Premier league team playing alongside teams like Liverpool and Arsenal, let alone Bayern Munich and Red Star Belgrade. Wake me up I'm dreaming

I read somewhere on the messageboard, last season descibed as a debacle. Get real.

How can you "bankroll the club" and yet at the same time not want to "lose his money"?

Basically, he is lending the club money which he wants back at some stage.

Is he charging interest or management fees?

Sorry Phil, but our great benefactor seems to be a glorified bank not some Bolton equivalent of Jack Walker.

The club has spent ?30m in the past 6 months and is still looking for new players.

Why don't you go and support ManU or Chelsea, you ungrateful Tw@t

If they have any ambition they need to double that by august or i'm burning my season ticket!

Cheaper than fuel I suppose!

Agree with the point we must back Megson to stay here and get the extortionate amount that finishing in the Prem gets, (and to keep Garside on the Prem board)

what should they aspire to, frankie?

we should be challenging for champs league and if we don't win it this year it shows how rubbish a manager Megson really is!

Firstly, tell me what I am supposed to be grateful for, if you can you can think of reasoned response rather than abuse?

Secondly, I support Bolton, have done since the early eighties, and don't want to watch Man U or Chelsea.

you're like a stuck record, get over it and move on

last season was evidence of what is to come, without money BSA got us into Europe? I expect Megson to get us there now he's had over ?25 million since he joined.

dunno about owt else but i know no bank would've touched us when davies came along

We were in debt to the bank(s) when he came along and I am sure his guarantees, or whatever he has done to make sure the club's creditors didn't pull the plug is greatly appreciated, however he will want his money back at some stage so he is not the benefactor that Gartside makes him out to be.

You are presuming that to be the case aren't you. I don't think you're wrong, but we'll never fully understand or appreciate what Davies has done for the club I shuldn't think. If Davies hadn't come along when he did, I dread to think what state the club would be in now

Gartside said as much, plain as day, in the interview at the start of the thread

We're all aware of what you expect.

Minor f?cking miracles.

chambers says - benefactor noun a person who gives help, especially financial help, to an institution, cause or person.

i think davies fits that bill

gives = he doesn't want it back

loans = he wants it back

Wanderer28 says - If he doesn't want to lose his money then it is a loan and therefore he does not meet the definition of a benefactor.

i don't want to lose money i invest

often happens though

if we get relegated, davies will lose his money

are you saying at that point he becomes a benefactor?

casino says - bollocks

shame you didnt back BSA Gartside

I would have said that giving Sam the money to buy the Elk was backing him, to me that should have been the start of a new era under Sam, when he would have had money to spend but if would have been over a number of years, but I think Sam wanted it all at once and lost sight of the big picture, but thats only me take on it
