Allardyce's Final Team Selection

Well this is the last team selected by Allardyce, looking at it I would fancy the current team to beat them.

The final team that Sam Allardyce fielded on 28 April 2007 was;

Jaaskelainen

Campo (released)

Meite (West Brom currently negotiating a purchase)

Michalik (loaned and then sold to Leeds)

Gardner

Teymourian (released)

Thompson (retired)

Tal (signed by Beitar Jerusalem)

Speed (loaned and then sold to Sheffield United)

Davies

Anelka (sold to Chelsea)

I'd said you were right.

Looking at the team that Big Sam put out you wonder how we ever did manage to get into the top half of the Prem and qualify for Europe. Just goes to show how good a manager he was and how tactically astute. In that final game we drew 2-2 away at Chelsea and ended their title challenge (however we managed to pull of that result with that team i'll never know)I def agree than overall the team is stronger, younger and more energetic with the likes of Steinsson, Cahill, AOB, Taylor, Muamba all better than their predecessors and only time will tell if Elmander can live up to Anelka.

that team didn't get us to top 6

the team that got us to top 4 at new year did that

To be fair that was not the team that got us in the top half. The squad that day was decimated by injury. Hunt, Faye, Ben Haim, Nolan, Diouf were all missing and Campo was at right back instead of the "Campo" role.

Perhaps better comparing

Jussi

Hunt Faye Ben Haim Gardner

Campo Speed Nolan

Diouf Anelka Davies

with:

Jussi

Steinsson Cahill AOB Samuel/Gardner

McCann/JOB Muamba Nolan

Davies Elmander Taylor

As strange as his team selections and transfer dealings were, Megson beats him by far, for example, the suggestion of a swap of Meite for Greening, come on. Megson is an Idiot. Good job there will be three worse teams than us this season because its going to be another struggle.

Has Megson personally said that he wanted Greening?

Personally I think Megsons signings have been very good so far.

As mentioned, that team was severely decimated.

Hunt, nolan, TBH, Faye Diouf all missing.

Take Steinsson, Cahill, mouamba, Nolan & Taylor out of our squad, and would you be as sure that the 2008 vintage would win ?

I think we have a stronger team now, For a start, it's miles younger. That may not count in a one-off but it's bound to make a difference over a season.

BTW Where did this tactical genius Allardyce come from? Tactics were not his strong point. He got the team playing in a certain way which people found difficult to play against. But there was never, ever a plan B. And how many times have people complained about Allardyce's substitutions? Generally, he didn't know what to do if the 11 he sent out weren't working. Very rarely did an Allardyce sub make a difference.

can i mention ricketts at this point?

as for plan B, a team finishing consistently top 8 doesn't really need a plan B

You can mention Ricketts once or twice but I'm blowed if I can think of many more.

All i was questioning was the idea that Allardyce was a tactical genius. He was many things as I've mentioned but tactically, he wasn't great.

I read somewhere the other day 'Plan A WAS Plan B' - I've no idea what this means but no doubt it's very insightful.

There can be no doubt that our quality of player has dropped slightly, I'm not blaming Megson, the market has changed. Allardyce played the market brilliantly and latched on to the fact that with advances in training, nutrition and treatment, players can now last longer than before, much longer.

I mean, look at the standard of player we've phased out in recent years - Djorkaeff, Okocha, Stelios, Campo, N'Gotty, Speed.

There's no way we could hope to match that standard again.

Megson is doing the right thing, bringing in younger players and being clear about what role he expects them to play. He's spent money but it's not been frivolous like Todd was at times.

I remain to be convinced about Megson but his transfer activity so far has been bang on IMO.

He kinda laid the blueprint for 4-3-3, quite a big deal that, Chelsea won the league with it twice.

He found positions for players that suited them down to the ground - e.g. the Campo role

I dunno, what is tactical genius? Allardyce didn't change games so much I guess, whereas Mourinho would make 3 changes at HT and turn games around... but when you're bringing on Robben, Cole and Shevchenko or whatever it's a different ball game isn't it?

One word on megson signings:

"Rasiak"

Has Megson personally said that he wanted Greening?

Personally I think Megsons signings have been very good so far.

some have, some haven't

in the extra time mag, he mentions the good uns, but omits, for example, cohen, who was his first proper purchase.

"Rasiak"

Out of interest, who would you have signed at 10 to midnight before the transfer deadline?

One word on megson signings:

"Rasiak" CAHILL

In one.

Out of interest, who would you have signed at 10 to midnight before the transfer deadline?

Exactly

Rasiak has scored a good few goals internationally, there was no long term commitment in the signing, he gave us an option

Allardyce signed barrel loads of dross, but the secret is to get them cheap, give them a whirl, and ship them out pronto if they don't cut it

Judging Megson's transfer activity on one signing is daft, but judging it on one short term, transfer deadline, squad filler signing is beyond idiotic

There's not a manager alive that hasn't bought some players that have done well & some that were shit. Sammy Lee was only in a job 5 minutes, but managed AOB, who imo is not bad at all, & Braaten - less said the better.

Megson, as yet is unproven as far as BWFC is concerned. He's had to take over a poor side & keep us up & he's done it. Now he's got the chance to put his own stamp on the club, & for me it's so far so good. Cahill, Steinsson, Muamba, Elmander are, imo, all decent signings.

As for BSA. Well people can moan all day long about the effectiveness of his substitutions, the quality of his signings, the way in which he signs players (my personal favourite!!) but you can't argue with the fact that we had a few top 8 finishes & got into Europe twice. He must have done something right!!

In one.

Djorkaeff

Out of interest, who would you have signed at 10 to midnight before the transfer deadline?

As I am not in a position to sign anyone with 10 minutes to go to the deadline no one.

Megson should not have found himself in that postion either.

Djorkaeff
