August 29, 200817 yr Are Ethernet cables and Ethernet crossover cables the same thing? If not is the cable that attaches me to my modem a normal or crossover one? Thanks.
August 29, 200817 yr Tis an ntl one Would normally be a straight one, unless explicitly mentioned as a crossover. Most modern switches/routers are intelligent devices that accept either and make the correct connections.

August 29, 200817 yr So if I'm trying to connect something to my pc and create a network with it, I'm probably not using a crossover cable and need to get one. (Its not showing up) Fanking yoo If you are trying to connect directly from PC to another Pc/laptop/xbox360 etc without going through a switch or router, you need a crossover. If going from PC to switch, then you need straight. Switch to switch is a crossover. Pc to router is the wierd one, if its a genuine router, then straight, if its a router/modem, some models use a crossover, some a straight Clear as mud really.

September 2, 200817 yr Author What a fookin rigmerole. I arrived at PC World, looked in the PC section and couldn't see a crossover cable so I thought I would ask if they had one. Conversation went like this. Me : Scuse me mate do you have any crossover cable's? PC World Dude : Any what? Me : crossover cable's PC : What do you mean by that? Me : It's a networking cable PC : What does it look like? Me : Bit like a telephone wire extension. PC : Ah, you mean a Ethernet cable. Me : No I can see you have loads of them, I mean a crossover cable. PC : Whats it for? Me : Connecting my PC to another device. PC : Like an XBOX? Me : Sort of yes. PC : Well you dont need to connect your Xbox to your PC, you can just plug it into your modem with an Ethernet cable. Me : (Sigh) I dont have an XBOX, but I have a DBOX which I need to connect to my PC with a crossover cable, do you have any? PC : No its called an XBOX not a DBOX and you dont need to connect it to a PC. Me : I know what a fookin XBOX is!!!!! (counts to 10 in head) PC : Well whats this 'DBOX' for? Me : Watching cable tele. PC : Is it a cable box? Me : Yes PC : You watch the Virgin Media Channels on it? Me : Yes. PC : Well that just plugs straight into your cable connection then you dont need to connect it to your PC at all. Me : (Bites lip, and counts again) Listen if you were me, and you asked for a PC cable in PC world but the assistant didn't have a clue what you were talking about, what would you do? PC : Go to Malpin. Me : Sorry? PC : It's across the road from Bolton College, they are very good there, they know what they are talking about. Me : Are you serious? PC : Yeah, were not trained in anything technical, just pick up what we can. Me : (Shakes head as I drove past Malpin to get to PC World to speak to this fool. Get in car and drives to Maplin) I walk up to PC Cable section fearing the worst but there, bright as day are various length cross over cables, I choose one and take it to the counter. Me : Just this please. Maplin Dude : What you using this for? Me : (oh please god not again) I am going to connect my DBOX to my PC MD : Oh ok, so you need to flash it do you, this will be fine then just making sure you didn't think it was an ethernet cable, ?5.99 please. Morale of this story is that I shall never ever ever go to PC World for owt again.
September 2, 200817 yr What a fookin rigmerole. --- Morale of this story is that I shall never ever ever go to PC World for owt again. PC World is full of 'tards, but it's close to me. I needed a USB printer cable, they wanted ?18.99, got 3 for a pound from HomeBargains. Needed a HDMI cable, it had no price on so I asked, "?20", I walked off saying "good luck". ?9.99 from Sainsbury's.

September 2, 200817 yr so its best i don't go there and ask which laptop they recommend then???? They'd recommend an expensive one wouldn't they? It's not so bad for PC's and laptops but it's extortionate for cables.
September 2, 200817 yr Anybody want cables I can make them up to length, crossover/straight reasonable price.
September 2, 200817 yr Author so its best i don't go there and ask which laptop they recommend then???? http://www.bigpockets.co.uk/ get one from there, seem to be very reasonable. They also sell chocolate covered ants, which is a bonus.
September 2, 200817 yr PC World is fit for f**k all. I wouldnt buy anything from there as its junk. Use Maplin (or Happy) where possible.
September 2, 200817 yr PC World is fit for f**k all. I wouldnt buy anything from there as its junk. Use Maplin (or Happy) where possible. It's not strictly true, PCW occasionally have decent prices on blanks and you can get refunds easily on owt that doesn't work as you'd hoped. Maplin isn't the cheapest either.
September 2, 200817 yr aren't PCW doing dells now? shitty stock carrying no more dell than the badge, im told buyer beware
September 2, 200817 yr aren't PCW doing dells now? shitty stock carrying no more dell than the badge, im told buyer beware Only buy Dell's off the website.... PCW ones are the returned /damaged / call it what you will stock that is sold for pennies to PCW, they clean them up and sell on with Dells permision to use the Dell name..... buyer beware indeed!!!
September 2, 200817 yr Anybody want cables I can make them up to length, crossover/straight reasonable price. Aye, but not as cheap as me

September 10, 200817 yr HDMI cables are a quid in Woollies at the moment. When it comes to cables is always worthwhile buying quality stuff, you can have the best TV on earth if you're using shite cables you'll get a shite picture quality! Same with any audio cables too!
September 10, 200817 yr When it comes to cables is always worthwhile buying quality stuff, you can have the best TV on earth if you're using shite cables you'll get a shite picture quality!Same with any audio cables too! digital cables do not apply. (well not so much as most people will notice)

What on earth are you talking about? Maybe with audio, I don't know as I use optical, unless you can get a higher quality of light through an expensive cable? But in the world of digital and HDMI, it's all much of a muchness. There's no way on earth that a ?20 PC World cable is any better than a 99p Woolies one, which is the point; PC World is overpriced tat.
