What proposals

It's the question we'll be asked in the Road tax referendum.

 

Quite a balanced question, contrary to the public millions spent in promoting it.

why?

I'm not; but those who do have been dazzled by the promise of shiney new buses.

never drive into manchester 'at peak times' never will do. those who do need their bumps feeling

 

if it forces businesses into outlying towns (bury, bolton, wigin etc) all the better.

 

i live in bury and it's getting feck all from TIF investments that i'd use other than perhaps direct trams to trafford centre and the airport.

 

most of the improvements in bolton (new station, extra carriages on the trains, more school buses) will happen anyway just at a slower rate

I used to, for many years I might add, and if needs must, I would again rather than public transport. Call me an old cynic but I just don't believe paying this congestion charge will give us a super dooper, efficient, clean public transport system.

s'pose living in horridge getting to manc on public transport would be a bit of a long trip going through bolton etc.

 

i'm only looking at it from a purely selfish point of view, if the trams are more frequent and go to more places i'm happy.

You need to step into the real world. I drive into Manchester but get paid well enough to make it worth my while, thank you very much. Let me know if you encounter any blue chip IT companies based in Farnworth or Breightmet though eh. Although I doubt most civil servants would know a blue chip company from a chip shop.

 

If businesses are forced out of the centre they won't move into towns such as Bolton, Bury or Wigan, which with all due respect to them, are fcuking grim. They will move to South Manchester, where the skills pool is much larger as the highly skilled hence wealthier employees already live there. It is also more accessible from fashionable parts of town where graduates from the universities already gravitate to. Many businesses already operate from this area due to it's proxity to the airport and quality offices already exist.

 

The net result of this is that jobs move further away from the Lancashire former mill towns. Catching public transport from Bolton into Manchester and then onto say Cheadle Heath really isn't viable so the few people from Bolton with decent jobs will move away, before long the whole place will resemble Johnny Fold. Brilliant.

would vote no, as shiny and as frequent as these trams and buses would be, none would have a tow hitch to hitch the compressor up to, so would still have to go in the van anyway. again this is from a purley selfish point of view

because I never come into contact with massive multi national companies with turnoverers far greater than most of your 'blue chip' companies

 

congratulations on getting well paid, if you're so in demand you can 'afford' the charge or go in later/earlier as these wonderful companies will be glad to pay your way.

Horwich is the nearest conurbation to me, which is exactly my point. Public transport won't work for all of us as not all of us live near a tram stop or direct route to Manchester without having to use the car anyway to get to the public transport, which seems to defeat the point a little.

that is one thing i find fault in with the system.

I would rather there be less traffic on the roads and would enjoy listening to people i don't like at work moan about it.

In the mid 1990s the number 8 bus was quick enough to get it back from Manchester after work,more people with cars means it takes too long now.

If the congestion charge is priced high enough to reduce traffic by a good percentage,then that is fine with me.
