i said early on it the season that gardner looks a different player than in previous years.

 

obviously sam NEVER saw him as a decent winger. which i totally agreed with. but his workrate, pace and discipline making him a respectable leftback.

 

but this season he seems to be playing with far more confidence than he ever did under allardyce. he's the player we thought we'd signing 10 years ago when he came on at west brom and scored the winner.

 

ok his finishing is poor, as is his crossing, but he's gotta be given a start. he causes problems for defenders. I can see how megson may struggle to fit him in the team, but somebody needs to be sacrificed.

Totally agree. I thought Ricky turned into a very good Prem left back (didnt he win player of the season about 4 years ago?) but IMO we lost more than we gained in converting him. After 5 years as a full back its no wonder he can't hit a cows arse with a banjo but regular starts out wide should sort that out. That and banning players from wearing blades and go back to proper studs.

I may very well get caned here but I've never rated Gardner as a footballer. No doubting the lad's effort, and I like the fact he's direct, but his touch and technical ability are awful - for me he fcuks up on the basics so often. He's fast - errr, so is Vaz Te - but he never ever looks like he has the ball under control to me, and his final ball is alarmingly bad far too often. I think because of his status within the club he gets a break whereas other players get hammered for the same, if not lesser, indiscretions. Am I on my own in this view?? AM I NOW THE ANTICHRIST??!?

 

For the record, I get behind the lad when he's playing, and I think he gives of his best - I'm just not sure what his best exactly equates to. I think a wider issue is that we as a club seem to accept technical mediocrity more readily than other Prem clubs IMHO, but that may be for another thread.

He's had problems staying on his feet for 10yrs now, I can't see that ever getting sorted out.

I may very well get caned here but I've never rated Gardner as a footballer.
