I remember 31st Dec 1983 better, too be honest. Got thwacked 5-nowt at Bramhall Lane, train home and changed, into town for a few underage beers (Brass Cat, Nag's Head and so on) and then sneaked into the New Years disco at The Nevada through the shithouse window.

Certainly was. After the game everyone piled down the town and onto the Town Hall steps. I remember seeing people from WH Smiths opposite on the roof of the shop taking piccies of the mass - would love to see one of them.

My mum worked at Burnden in the Promotions dept. and was one of the staff on the town hall steps with the players. She recently told me that Neil Whatmore passed her the trophy to take away at the back after they had showed it to the crowd. She didn't think it an important thing, it was just part of her job. If it was me I wouldn't have stopped bragging about it, it took her over 30 years just to casually mention it to me during a conversation.

When I lived in Cramlington in the North East, Ray Kennedy was a regular at the local Bay Horse when he was at his family in Seaton Delaval. I remember seeing him in their on the night he signed for Liverpool and he was jokingly telling everybody that he only agreed to sign if Shankley left. He bought me a pint that night after he had bumped into me and spilled some of my pint. I often wonder if that was a sign of the beginnings of Parkinson's Disease. I met him a few times in the Bay Horse. He is a genuinely nice guy even if Stanley Matthews didn't rate him as a footballer.

my memory may not be as sharpe as it was? But correct me if I'm wrong, The Last game yes was against Fulham after we won promotion at Blackburn. Nice that someone uploaded the original program but the Fulham team sheet is not correct? the players missing are George Best and Rodney Marsh. and the final score was 1-1. the match i thought was a bit of an anti climax after Blackburn. The Highlite for me was that equaliser By George Best (cracker)! when he scored you would have thought he'd scored for Bolton. A small section of the crowd started to chant his name which got louder and louder all around the ground, George just stood and waved back at the crowd. Remember the Town hall reception and not being able to see burger all. Happy memories of my favorite period in football (bring back the 70's)

You are thinking of the 1976/77 season.

 

We played Fulham twice at home that season - once in the League Cup in the League Cup third round replay on the 5th October, 1976 - which we drew 2-2 after extra time, and the Division 2 game a few weeks later on the 30th October, which we won 2-1.

 

Edit - Best did not score in the League Cup match.

I was in the Burnden Paddock that day which was unusual for me so I am guessing it was a Cup game. George Best and Rodney Marsh played for them and also Bobby Moore. Moore got sent off in that game (near or at the end of the match ?? ). I believe it was the only time that Bobby Moore was ever sent off as a professional player.

 

Now I also remember Rodney Marsh getting a lot of stick from the Bolton crowd, a lot of funny comments about his tarty hairstyle, and being a puff etc. One Bolton Wag ran on the pitch and gaveRodney Marsh a handbag One of the funniest ever Burnden Park moments (but was this the same match?)

Anyone else Go to The League cup Game against Fulham at St Andrews? (a replay which in those days was played at a nutral ground) Remember it all too well for all the wrong reasons a.k.a Birmingham city fans. Got in the ground quite early with maybe a coach load of lads out numbering the few Brummies already in the ground, when they saw us they started chanting "birmingham and bolton". After a bit of friendly banter their numbers grew and the chant changed to "birmingham and Birmingham" then as it was all about to kick off the few Fulham fans behind the goal started singing and with that the brummies turned and headed towards them. All was well until after the match (which we won) then it all kicked off near a scrap yard where are coaches parked. I still have a strong dislike for City even after all these years. my mate got a big lump on his head after a brick was thrown by one of them. Still we went on a good cup run that year with more fun and games including Everton away and at home, But that's another story for another time.

Oh I just remembered something else. (well sort of a distant paranoid parallel universe type of memory)

When Moore got sent off, their manager at the time (can't remember who it was) ordered all the Fulham players off the pitch and to the tunnel in protest. They returned after an arguement with the ref.

 

Please can a statto tell me this was true because I haven't had a drink today, and I am getting a sort of 'Is my mind playing tricks on me?' kind of a feeling

a bolton fan definitely ran on the pitch and gave rodney marsh a handbag,i was only 8 at the time but certainly remembering it happening

the handbag was a saturday afternoon, and i don't think it was the promotion game, either

Bolton's 2nd equaliser in the 2-2 draw against Fulham was in the 6th minute of injury time.Fulham and Bobby Moore in particular thought the game should have been over by then and he got sent off for protesting about the length of time added.

The Fulham team went back to the dressing room refusing to play extra time but eventually went back on the pitch after the ref and linesman pleaded with them in the dressing room.Fulham didn't have either Marsh or Best in their team or on the subs bench

Sorry to be a bit stattoesque but as I recall Peter Mellor deflected into the net a Sam Allaryce header that was going well wide in the league game 76/7 which we won 2-1. Mike Walsh late 30 yard volley that caused all the controversy came down out of the floodlights with snow on it and looped in to the top corner. The ref still played on for another couple of minutes and Bobby Moore went ape.
