What a rough and ready place it was yesterday afternoon, bags of pubs, bars and neetclubs, but overall an enjoyable supping venue for a visitor from Leigh.

My cousin opened a wine bar /nightclub in Leigh in the early 90's , Neros i think it was called. Apparently it closed after a year, Leigh wasn't ready for that type of thing!. Maybe he should gone to Warrington.

Early 90's?

There wasnt a pub or club I didnt go in then in Leigh and it was a busy night out with folk coming from far and wide.

Dont recall a Nero's there.

Are your sure he didnt open a coffee bar?

I'll check with him, i thought it was called Neros it was definitely a wine bar/club. I recall him saying he needed his black belt at Judo once or twice!

At that time I recall Reubins, Tropics, Fletchers, and Woodys (neetclubs). Segars (previously Peppers) shut about 90, not sure about Shergars. It lowered its weekly levels of violence by turning into a boxing club.

So you're saying that Leigh was the birthplace of Caffe Nero?

Oh I spent somtimes in Tropics, downstairs at the start of the night then move upstairs for the late bar

Thats the one, upstairs was also known as Bananas, then became Tropics 2. Dave Tickle and Pete O'Toole on the doors with Black Lenny. Happy days.

The only experience I have of Warrington is visits to Ikea with the Mrs. And for that reason, I'm out.

what was the name of the pub across from George and Dragon that had had a nightclub upstairs?

It used to be one of the places pre-tropics I could get served at at 16.

There is nowt opposite the Dragon but offices and banks; but opposite and then round the corner by 50 yards, is/was Tropics. Tropics was the downsstairs bar and Bananas/Tropics 2 was the club upstairs. It was all Tropics to me though.

Across the road but further down is the Leigh Arms; they used to have a club upstairs but not for long from what I remember.

Next door to the Dragon was Segars/Peppers, which was down a bit of a back alley and upstairs to the side of the Charcoal Hob (now the Casba next to the Leigh Arms). Its been demolished years now for the new(er) bus station.

Actually, thinking on, I once walked into Tropics with an air rifle wrapped in a bin liner, but thats another tale. Also used it as the meeting place for when I was touting scores of Stoke tickets the week before their league wining game up here in the early 90's, tipping Tickle off for a few quid as 'hired help'. And a good mate got a wine bottle over his head too one night. Oh, and I did my first drugs in there too.

Fuckin hell I need to go to bed before I feel really old.

Dave Tickle on the doors with Black Lenny

That's funny on its own =D>

Aye, there is irony in it :D

Kerry Katona obviously doesn't find Warrington rough enough, she's started going out round Wigan!

Been watching the Wire V Leigh tonight at Chorley, because the LSV cant stage back to back matches, one rugby game on Monday, and a tin-pot Unibond match on a Tuesday. Anyway, we got revenge beating them 3-2, Matt Janson had a blinder.

Leigh Arms, thats the one, classy birds, its not big or clever fingering them on the dance floor.

Never been out round Leigh since 1989, about the time I 'found' dennis the menace and took t'pier.

If Kerry Katona starts going out in Tyldesley, then we know she's a truly hopeless case. She'd fit right in, mind
