no balls Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 I started typing Shilton, but then stopped to wonder whether he'd played for the Saints.I assume he did then? He did. Mid 80s I think
droywhite Posted December 6, 2009 Author Posted December 6, 2009 Southampton is correct the sixth player is Colin Todd
MickyD Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 According to Wikepedia Todd hasn't captained England but Shilton has. Ball captained England in 1975 but the rest were much later in the 70s.
Guest Biff Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 I can think of nine players who have captained England and played for Southampton. Alf Ramsey, Alan Ball, Kevin Keegan, Mick Channon, Mick Mills, Dave Watson, Peter Shilton, Mark Wright and Alan Shearer.
MickyD Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Sio come on then. Taking Todd out and Shilton in, did they all occur in the same 12 month period or was that bit just to add a bit of interest?
Guest Biff Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Sio come on then. Taking Todd out and Shilton in, did they all occur in the same 12 month period or was that bit just to add a bit of interest? Just to add interest. How many captained England whilst a Southampton player.

Alan Ball played for Southampton later than 1980 and Peter Shilton wasn't there from 1970 to 1982,he won the European Cup at Forest in the late 70's
george Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Shilton was at Southampton in the mid 80s, he is the goalkeeper listed in the 85/86 Southampton v Everton programme. I bought this programme about 20 years ago because at the time it was being praised as the "finest club programme ever issued". The fixture was just a routine league game in November but it was during Southampton's centenary season and a special programme was produced celebrating the club's centenary. It is very good too, with an in depth look at Southampton's history spread over 66 pages for only 50p.The 85/86 Bolton home programme was 50p for only 20 pages.
Guest Biff Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 I copied Watson's details for Shilton by mistake. Shilton played for Southampton from 82 - 87. Alan Ball had two spells at Southampton from 76 - 82. He played in Canada for two years in the middle of this spell.
