Importing From China

Do any of you fine gents and ladies have any experience or knowledge of importing goods from China.

Featured Replies

i've known people to be stung with big charges when getting stuff from china.

unless the seller can prove its a gift, customs over there make a charge

and then when it gets to customs here, because its been declared as something other than a gift, you hvae to pay a customs charge again.

A few things or in bulk? You'll need ot be a little more specific, please.

Be very afraid, especially if your bringing in goods that have to be of British and/or IEC standard or require CE marking. Do you homework very well.

I think you also need to specify with HMRC with regards to VAT that you wish to import goods.

Very important is that. My company imports around USD 500K per month, and we have dealings with numerous factories.

I contacted a factory recently and enquired if their goods were RoHS compliant (something that's needed for the majority electronic components) - anyway, the factory confirmed the goods were OK. I also asked if they had full CE approvals, my contact said they didn't have the approvals, but it weasn't a problem, as they could screen print the CE markings on to the goods if we wanted them to............naturally, we decided not to proceed.

You'll also probably have to get used to paying for good T/T in advance, as the Chinese aren't big on giving credit. Remember as well that you'll have to pay the VAT and any duty that might be due on the goods when they arrive into the country.
