Coyles Away Form................

Didn't Elmander have our only meaningful shot on target last night? The one where the rebound fell to Lee?

Quite correct i didn't - i hated the man to be honest as most did. That however was more about PR.   I have nothing against Coyle though but cannot help feeling he is very very naive and lives in

    Oh do fuck off

  • spot on imo.

Over reaction IMO. As someone said earlier why on earth would he have changed the formation and made any uneeded changes after an away win? Coyle for me is slowly changing the minds of the players in the way he wants them to play and we are seeing better performances, be it home or away, from certain players - Knight, Rickets, Chungy, Elmander, Muamba. Arguably also from Robinson (although he is a weak link) and Davies

Yes we are more vulnerable in certain areas for example when we go a goal down we chase the game and always look like conceding another and we leave the defence exposed when pushing forward being caught on the break. But that is offset by a more measured approach when attacking and the addition of Wilshire's creativity combined with Chungy on form down the right and the combatitive approach of Muamba complimenting each other well.

We are still very much in transition and we are still and will continue to be involved in a relegation battle. We are therefore going to have the downs of results/performances like yesterday with hopefully enough decent performances/results (6/7 points could be enough) to stay up.

IMO what must remain consistent is Coyle's approach and belief in the way he and the palyers turn this around. And if that's a positive 4-4-2 home or away then so be it. Much rather this than confused messages about changing formations/tactics/players and the mental approach to games. If you are going to be overly re-active after every defeat then we may as well welcome back Sammy Lee.

Have a bit of faith in the way Coyle wants to move us forward.

The formation should have changed last night because we were playing Sunderland and not West Ham again. Sunderland have pacy strikers who can run past our defence and get shots in. They also unlike West Ham have an uncompromising defence which will not be bullied by Davies again unlike West Ham. Also Davies found himself surrounded by three opposition players when the long balls were punted to him. A team playing football would have beaten Sunderland last night but the only Bolton players to show any skill were Elmander and Wilshere.

Quick question for Casino, Victor Meldrew or Barnstoneworth. Can you talk us through the first Sunderland goal?

More goals needed. Thats why half of the team need fecking off. They arent capable of scoring goals.

I'll let Muamba off because he's more defensive (Although he should chip in with a few per season)

Elmander and Gardners goalscoring record is not good enough and we should get rid of both.

We dont even seem able to test the opposition keepers in the main.

Big improvement needed if we want to climb the table.

as has been said a few times already swap Darren Bent for one of our forwards and we'd be doing a damn sight better.

Sunderland will stay up this season thanks in the main to Bent

Cant see us getting much from our remaining away games. Need to win our home games.. COYW!

Funny this has been mentioned as I was talking to a Burnley fan in November who had been to every away game and a lot of fans weren't happy cos of his all out attacking style away from home even though they did the same at home.

Personally I would rather us have a go away from home than shut up shop and rag a draw.

In perspective ,he's had 7 away games,Drawn 1,won 1 lost 5 but 3 of those losses I would have expected to lose.

Getting beat by 3 and 4 like Blackburn/Mackems doesn't help the goal difference though.

We have 3 home games that are very winnable and that with a few away points possible should get us over the line.

For me it is getting over the line and surviving this season so OC can change his personel in the summer.

what we need is megson as the away manager and coyle as the home manager.

job done.

The problem as i see it is that he never will change to 4-5-1.

Let us log the number of away points the team gets from now to the end of the season.

IMO it will be minimal playing this way.

To be fair we'll be playing Everton, Chelsea, Stoke and Tottenham.

To add to the discussion, I don't think we'd have got more points away from home with Megson than we got with Coyle. In fact I think we'd have got less, as I don't think Megson would have beaten West Ham, it was the pushing from the off with quick counter attacking play that beat West Ham, something we didn't do a lot of under Megson. Though we'd probably have got more points at home by beating Fulham, so swings and roundabouts really.

as has been said a few times already swap Darren Bent for one of our forwards and we'd be doing a damn sight better.

And Bruce paid ?1 million less for him than Megson paid for Elmander.

Coyle will get it right but for now he has to make do with what was left him.

and elmo is on 20k per week where bent is on at least 80k

i dont think that will ever happen.

where did you get that gem?

Quick question for Casino, Victor Meldrew or Barnstoneworth. Can you talk us through the first Sunderland goal?

no, nor the 4th :)

ah, actually barnstoneworth can probably do the 4th

he thought we still had a chance of getting back level!

where did you get that gem?

Thats the price often quoted by the press so had always thought that was the 'if every clause happens' price, if i'm wrong then i'm wrong.

If Coyle had started 4-5-1 against Sunderland and we had lost he would have been criticised for changing things after the win on Saturday. A 4-5-1 set up may have reduced the defecit but in my view the outcome would have remained the same.

Great point. Could you have imagined the reaction after a defeat playing 4-5-1;

"Well done Owen for being bold enough to change the formation after winning your first

away game. Unlucky!"

Yeah right, more likely it would have been what on earth was Coyle doing after taking such a

long time to get an away win, changing it all around.

Makes me laugh these folk who retrospectively say what the manager should have done.

Given our remaining away fixtures to get even a point will be a bonus...

If you are referring to my original topic then i feel that after 20 games with both clubs (1 win, 2 draws and 17 defeats) that proves that HIS away system does not work. Not difficult to see even for the slower ones amongst us.

If you are happy with 5 points from a possible 60 then fine - i am not.

When will he learn that it doesn't work away from home?

But it had worked in the game before the sunlun one, we WON away at West Ham, basic logic says you stick witht eh team that got you that result.

Overall his tactics may not be working but perhaps he thought he'd found one that was.

Bolton were stuffed on Wednesday conceding a goal in the first minute. In my opinion this is far to early in the game to put it down to the managers decisions on formation and tactics. In the first minute its all about players keeping their heads, concentrating, following runners and NOT conceding whether that be 4-4-2, 4-5-1 or whatever.

At one nil down away from home I couldnt see where a goal would come from with a 4-5-1 formation. Coyle had to call it as he saw it on the night but I personally dont think a 4-5-1 would have yielded a better result.
