Midfield Quandry

Featured Replies

We'll be able to change the right wing when Lee goes off with South Korea next month, he hasn't been at his best in the last 3 games[not done anything wrong though] but was excellent against Wolves and Newcastle, Lee was more like a right back yesterday and Ricketts was doing the attacking runs. Many players will find it hard against a negative 5-4-1 formation.

You need to start paying more attention young man

Lee has done much wrong, or are you forgetting him losing the ball in daft areas, his inability to close his man down letting him cross too easily (Diouf yesterday on numerous occasions for a start) and often leaving the full-back behind him with 2 men to cope with

Take your Korean-tinted glasses off

Midfield quandries are nice to have.

Knight and Robinson are on four yellows apiece - if they each get a fifth in the same game we'll be wishing we had the same 'problem' at the back.

It would be "convenient " if both their suspensions happened to be for the York cup match.

I like it, Jose, I like it.

It would be pointless as the cards are reset at the end of December anyway.

As I've said above, I'd like to see M Davies on the right tather than the continually ineffective Chung

just can't see it

Davies makes good runs but can't see Coyle sticking a centre mid player on the wing

it'll be Moreno before Davies M

I wouldn't say Chong was "continually" ineffective, he has as many good moments in a game as well as bad

I think Chung will come good again for us

But he's been shite for weeks

And cannot / does not defend

Moreno is a winger - much like Chung, whereas M Davies would be a very good traditional right midfielder

We are lucky at the moment and will not continue to get away with playing 2 wingers - Petrov and Lee...whereas Taylor and Davies out wide would offer creativity and be solid too. I see no reason why M Davies cannot play on the right.....he's a midfielder that suits the middle or wide (unlike Muamba for example); it all depends how solid we want to be

I think Coyle has set his stall out for this season with his tactics/style as to how solid he wants to be

can't help thinking Davies would keep drifting back to the middle as opposed to staying wide / covering his full back

but I do doubt we'll find out unless Chong and then Moreno get injured / suspended - and even then I reckon it'd be Taylor then on the right with Petrov on the left

- I certainly wouldn't put Davies out wide if it meant dropping Petrov (as in, I'd play Taylor wide right before Davies, and Petrov wide left before Taylor)

tough one really with Davies as I think we def need to go with Holden / Muamba in future, Davies makes the middle too lightweight with either of them two alongside him - and Coyle likes his wingers

Coyle's stall has been set out with 4-4-2 and that's fine, but we need to be adaptable depending upon opposition etc - for exaple it very nearly back-fired on Sunday

You have no evidence to support the comment on Davies drifting inside, but I would most certainly waget that Ricketts would rather have him there than Chung, who has offered so little help recently

point a - I know, but Coyle doesn't seem to care, it's 4-4-2 with wingers, end of, it would seem (from his time here so far and at Burnley - he is not adaptable) - the only time he has, as I recall, done any different was V Blackpool when he went all out for the goals/point

point b - I know, it was just an opinion, like your Ricketts wager opinion! Under Megson, the old favourite was "but he's is the manager and I'd take his opinon over yours as he sees him in training everyday", but I used to hate it when people say it as it's an easy case to put forward, I still do, so instead I say I think Davies will drift inside, because I think he would as it happens when players play out of position, and that's why Coyle doesn't put him there - I might be wrong, not arsed, time might tell, but see point a, I don't think it will happen - unless Chong goes to the Asia cup and Moreno does cack in his absence, even then, he'd probably put Ricketts on the right

so you wouldn't play a right footed centre mid on the right, but you'd play a one footed, one paced left midfielder as a right winger

i'll get back to you on that one

I've seen enough of Davies to be convinced he'd do an absolutely fine job on the right. He's got a good footballing brain, two feet and has a trick or two. We could do worse than have a few players like that in our team - it's only going to support keeping the ball moving and playing to feet.

I also think he could do a job in the middle in the mould of Wilshere etc., but needs to improve in the physical aspect of the game.

Will turn out to be a real good 'un, given time IMO.

was that for me?

if so, no

unless by "one footed, one paced left midfielder as a right winger" you meant Taylor, what I said was:

I wouldn't play Davies on the right wing right now - I'd play Taylor on the right before Davies as he has shown before he can do it

I'd play Petrov on the left, before dropping Petrov to put Taylor on the left, to accomodate Davies on the right

Petrov should be dropped for Taylor anyway IMO

Petrov should be dropped for Taylor anyway IMO

IMO Petrov should start before Taylor on the left

if we want a more solid midfield, home or away, we should put Taylor on the right

not Davies

Petrov's pace and touch, in general, is too good for us not to use on a regular basis

this is of course, my opinion, and not Owen Coyle's - which seems to be different to all of ours anyway

away from home or against tougher opposition - I'd play

Petrov - Muamba - Holden - Taylor

otherwise I'm happy with

Petrov - Muamba - Holden - Chong

all things being equal of course, like fitness/form etc

after the last 3 games, as good as Mark Davies is and what he brings to the game - he makes our middle too lightweight and far more open - City and Blackpool took over in the middle and I can't quite put my finger on why we got better when he got sent off, but that's irrelevant

therefore I don't think Davies should start in the middle and I personally wouldn't sacrifice Petrov/Taylor to accomodate him on the right

guess that is why this thread is called "midfield quandry"

Guess again. It's because Crampo can't spell 'quandary' :D
